hello hello all,

i think a similar thread has been posted here before, but i cant seem to find it.

how do you guys rate Lord's as one of the better shops? i bought a UV HMC filter (52mm) last week for $20. came back and realized that it normally only sells for $10. ;(

have i been ripped off? or is that the real price of the filter?

regards,

i think $10 is normal UV... HMC retails at about $15-$20 normally at most shops.

just to add, i got my HMC uv 52mm from them at about $18 bundled with my 50/f1.8 lens.

I think the price is ok. But I just had a bad experience with lord's. Called them to ask about stock for the nikkor 70-300mm VR and they say have stock. So I walked from centerpoint to luck plaza in the rain to reach their shop. When I reach their shop, one person say no stock, another person say got stock... Then someone reluctantly showed me a copy. Tested the lens and found a big scratch (or something) on the front element. Very obvious, there is no way you could have missed that.

In the end, never buy so just walked back to centerpoint in the rain where I parked my car....

Let's put it this way, I am just not comfortable with the way they do business. Maybe if you are a "regular" or good friend, it is ok.

It is such a pity as they have a lot of stock for nikkor lens.

ok, not defending them, but could it be that one person know about the scratch so he said there i no stock, while the other are still blank about it? :dunno:

I bought all my stuff from them without recommendation and they had not given me such problems before. I think explorer may be right.

Make sure you get the name of the person on the phone with you, so you can hold him responsible.

i've shopped there a couple of times. no problems so far and their prices are quite competitive i must say.

hmmm alright. thanks guys!

just wanted to clarify. i kinda like the place mainly because it has one of the largest range of nikkor lenses. nice place to try try and compare lenses..

i bought the same filter - UV(N) HMC 52mm - for $12. but they quote me $15, after a long discussion between two of the staff.

I think for this kind of small accessories the price varies, so must roughly know the price beforehand. Also, try to bargain, and tell them you pay cash. Usually they will lower the price after that.

So take it as lesson learnt. Now overpay a few dollars better than next time a few hundred. =)

imho, i surfed a few forums looking for info about UV(0) and UV(N) (both made by hoya and both are HMC quality). I found out that the UV(N) are said to be much cheaper than the UV(0) (roughtly 30%), at least in places like US. I do not know about SG.

as for quality different, some said that the coating ain't as lasting as the UV(0), while some said that it is just a rename for newer batch of Hoya HMC.

Conclusion: im :dunno: somewhere. :embrass:

hmm.. i asked for 52mm filter, the staff at Lord's say got 2 kinds, non-multicoat and multi-coat. he gave me the multi-coat which is the UV(N). is the UV(0) sold locally? if so, i too wana know the difference.

yes, like i said before there are 2 different kind of Hoya HMC, one UV(N) and one UV(0).
the casing are also different.

Lords quote me $20 on normal one (left) and $25 for multi-coat (right).
I took the multi coat, anyway it is only $5 difference.
Is this a good buy or did they ripped me off?

Also they quoted me $250 for SB400.
RRP is $240. Saw here they offer $210.

bro, both of the filter are Hoya HMC Multi-coated... for actually difference, no one actually know. except hoya themself.
fyi:
left = UV(0) or UV-Guard
right = UV(N)

I bought my 67mm Hoya HMC UV(O) multicoated filter $35 from John 3:16 for $35

Know the price b4 u visit any of the camera shops

from my average understanding on filters.. UV(o) is optical glass, UV(n) is normal glass.

why is ExplorerZ's 2 filters both HMCs and having (n)/(o).. Hoya previously made all filters UV(o) but due to cost cutting measure, they introduced the usage of normal glass compared to optical glass. hence the HMC(n) 77mm that why is ExplorerZ owns is considered 'old stock', probably manufactured before 2004?

essentially, today, probably most amateur/intermediate grade Hoya UV filters are made of normal glass. eg. UV, HMC UV.
for professional grade filters, it is made of optical glass. eg. S-HMC UV(o), Pro-1 S-HMV UV(o).

yes, do correct me if i am wrong ;)

haha a bit blur, but this is what i heard from other forum as well but no one can give a confirmation tho. anyway I got the 77mm HMC UV(0) before the UV(N). ;)
