Hi
Anyone knows is there is a minidv recorder that will take in composite video as input?
Want to record high quality "uncompressed" video from my cctv camera la.
thanks for any advice.

how about a HDD DVR set? the new models are affordable and packs quite alot of space into it's Hard disk...

I think even the highest end consumer model is much much cheaper than a MiniDV deck

there may be even program settings and timers and all that as well.

good luck

thanks for the tip!
typically dvrs record in compressed mpeg format which is not suitable for our use :(
are there any that can record "uncompressed"?
thanks..

Can I just ask why you are looking for uncompressed recording? It needs very large hard disk space and is not very practical for most people.

And by the way, miniDV recorder does not record uncompressed, it records in DV format, which is around 5:1 compression. If miniDV is OK for you, many miniDV camcorders can actually record to tape from a composite or S-Video (Y-C) input, and they are much cheaper than a dedicated miniDV recorder. Maybe you should take a look at this option?

need as uncompressed as possible becos need to process frame by frame..
compression artifacts shows up clearly when viewing frame by frame...
Ya very big space required.. needs lots of miniDV tapes :(
Any specific camcorder able to take video-in (PAL/CCIR).
Thanks..

Hmm, a dv deck? I know there is a sony one which has a screen and cost something like 2k? It can run on camera batteries too! Maybe you may want to rent one? Cinegear has some tat they rent out at something like $60?

save yourself the trouble of using a deck if you want true uncompressed video.
Even the industry standard Digital Betacam machines does have some form of compression.

Get a PC/Mac with appropriate capture card & plenty of HDD space.
Feed in your composite video source & capture the video directly into the computer.
Depending on which capture card, you can choose to capture in 8bit / 10bit Uncompressed video.

But for a composite video source with about 480tv lines resolution from your camera source, I recommend 8bit uncompressed video will do, but be prepared for a huge array of hdd.
If your camera source cannot handle that kind of resolution, then the regular DV compression will be more than suffice.

Thanks! Very detailed help.
As shooting is outdoors without power around, PCI framegrabbers are out (unless carry charged UPS as source, heavy la) , can only use USB framegrabbers, frame rates are not so high and irregular.
Source is at least 560TVL resolution.
On notebook saving toHD eats up HD space very quickly. MiniDV is cheaper relatively and can hold like 60 mins each tape. Battery can last quite long also. Hence..
Compression seems tolerable.... not that sure yet.

Hopefully can rent something... or maybe just outsource the whole shoot.
Its documentary type work not creative nor artistic .

Thanks no choice carry that UPS .
