List of Errant Retailers.
As in any city, Singapore has a small number of establishments whose practices tarnish the good image of reputable establishments. Be vigilant when approached with offers of free gifts or special discounts.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) takes a very serious view of all malpractices. Tourists can be assured that all complaints will be thoroughly investigated and the necessary action will be taken against any establishment with bad practices.

Complaints can be lodged with the STB by calling the Hotline at 1800-736 3366 (toll-free in Singapore). If you wish to receive some form of redress within 24 hours (depending on the complexity of the claim), you can also lodge your complaint directly with the Small Claims Tribunals (SCT) at: 2 Havelock Road, #05-00 Apollo Centre, Singapore 059763. An administrative fee of S$10 is payable to the SCT.

The STB has received at least three (3) complaints against the following establishments in the period of July to September 2003:

Talking about this, does it meant that good retailer always give a fair price ?. I think it is more advisable to shop around. Was at Peninsula yesterday looking for a battery for my camera. Saw reputable shop starting with "C" When in to ask and give model. Salesman first question have you come before ?. I thought what the hack what has this got to do anyway mumble a little. Price comes out, wah quoted at list price ???. Than I said so X, he replied 10% discount. Price comes to $149. OK went over to black listed Ishida opp, saw the same thing, asked for price reply $129, wow a black listed shop cheaper than reputed shop. Than finally bought the thing at Alan, $115 no bargaining. Moral better to shop around otherwise also get chop right. All prices includes GST.

shops are blacklisted for offering items at ABOVE RRP. Not for selling u at the RRP.

Think you simply MUST know the market price of the item you wanna buy, else get "TOK"ed also dont know.

I agree even reputable shops try to "TOK" around also, bought from cathay and AP before.. price usually not constant, depending on who gave u the quote, honesty of the salesmen/women, the way u ask questions and the n00bie look on your face.

Price difference quoted over the phone and in person by AP for my flash was $40, when i told them how much i was quoted, the salesmen pretended to check with the other guy, i was given the quoted price.

Many shops quotes you big numbers and pretend to give discounts to make it worth the bet. It's a tricky business

The shops gotta survive anyway, we just need to shop smart..

C is not a reputable shop... In fact, I find it hard to define a "reputable" shop in Singapore. But that doesn't mean they cheat also. You just got to be street smart and do some homework first b4 buying. If you look at the prices of items in Singapore, they tend to put some ridiculous values on them and then tell you Oh you can have 20% discount or sometimes as much as 50%. "We are clearing stocks..." DUH.

End of the day - do your homework - check out the prices. Buy. Stop whining.
