I understand that some of the older 3rd party lenses do not work with newer bodies. I assume this is what Canon delibrately did to try to control the canon body's lense market. Rechipping the lense usually cost abt $120, which makes getting a third party lense not worthwhile.

So i thought of compiling a list of incompatible list for the benefit of those who intends to get a 2nd hand 3rd party lense? The only lense i know of are as below.

Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro EX
- 300D -- can only work at f2.8 w/o flash, Needs rechip
- 10D -- Some can work, some Needs rechip, donno why
- D30 -- Can work

Sigma 24mm f2.8 APO Macro Super
- 300D -- Needs rechip

Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO HSM
- 300D, 10D, D30 -- Needs rechip

Sigma 300 Macro
- 300D -- Needs rechip, rechip==SG$120

Cheers :)

$120? I thought Sigma will rechip the lens for free?

That was my experience with the Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro anyway (and also my 70-200 f2.8).

I think they will rechip only if still under warranty. But since usually its the older lenses that requires rechip, chances are that they are out of warranty. For the sigma105mm, i called up sigma and they say they will charge me abt $80-120, but have to check the lense first.

Your lense still got warranty when you sent for rechip?

No, they were both quite a few years old. Definitely no warranty.

Whao, really? i called up and the lady said got charges... humm.. guess better option is to send it down for them to check the lense... probably they will not charge me after all. thks.

It seems that only Sigma lenses need rechip. I don't recall or have heard of any Tamron lenses that need any rechipping. Wonder what's the reason

If they are too old like my 70-210/4-5.6 APO UC and 24/2.8 of 10 years vintage, they will just tell you "Parts Not Available".

Even if you want to pay, these lenses are basically usable only with old EOSs. Which is a pity cos the 70-210 is super sharp.

They are worth almost nothing now

I would have done better buying Canon EF lenses because I can still sell them for decent money. Now I have to buy new ones because I didn't want to pay for EF 10 years ago.

Having said all that, I just bought a 2nd hand 500 DG Super flash. In this case, the savings off a 550EX is big enough that even it is worth nothing in 5 years time, it's OK. Fantastic flash.

But I will avoid Sigma lenses from now on because the savings are not really worthwhile.

Not sure about whether Tamron - read somewhere they actually bought the license from Canon but other reports say they reverse engineer just like Sigma.

sorry what do u mean by cannot work? Meaning it will hang the camera? or cannot AF or metering?

I owned a couple of sigma lenses and flash so I'm pretty concerned. Thks.

I am not sure how many types of error they can give. So far, it gave me the error 99.

So now i am eyeing on the 15-30mm, but worry when the new canon 10D downstream comes out, it might not be able to use this sigma lense on the new body... then the saving i get from getting this lense might not be justifiable...

Personal Opinion: best to check whether sigma charge us for rechip before buying their lense
