LINK: Why Buy Leica ?

It's about the build quality, optical performance, consistency, simplicity and reliability of these tools that don't stand in our way, try to change our methods or thinking and let us concentrate on what matters most - getting the shot.

Imho, i do not like it. Its all one-sided praise with some very broad generalisations. Says alot but also very little. Whilst i too personally am a fan of Leica, i am not a blind fan; there is a need to be conscious about the realistic limitations and drawbacks. We already have several threads in cs where we see newbies having questions and issues only after buying their leicas. Eg there are ppl starting their RF journey with M9P + lux ASPH but have a very skewed view of things. I think u all know what i mean.

I think you're right there. There's a need for some research and true understanding of a product before you buy it. Test it. Try it. See if it fits you. If it doesn't, don't waste your time on it. However this won't change anytime soon. I think with a high probability of the M10 this year. There's going to be even more people attracted to the allure of expensive products.

Hi Mike

I laughed loudly when I read your candy-coated article. But seriously, after "trying" out the M8 for a few months, I almost gave up totally on the Red Dot. But the moment I tried out the M9, I was totally sold.
Leica has many flaws and weaknesses, but these help me to improve and enjoy my hobby more. But when I need to get some images for a "serious assignment", I still go for my 1D :bsmilie:
I  Leica, and waiting for the M10!

Left the Leica Marque..... loved it but trying to maintain the cost of purchasing the lens's and the rapid depreciation of the M Digitals it's not worth it for me....... your M9 / M9P will be worth 3500 in 2 years..... some M8's are 2500-2800 now ( how much new? )..... I could be wrong but a D3S is selling for more in a similar period.

NOT Bagging the brand..... lenses are awesome.... but my 24 f1.4 / 35 1.4 / and 85 f1.4 Nikkors for the same as a 35 S'LUX ????? :S

Tried the M9P and 50 S'LUX but at 16K NEW ??? Really now........

( TOTALLY Diff Cam i know...... but one bro here just bought a near mint hassy H4-D with 31MP back for 13K+ )

Dont flame me :)

Bro, everything is relative. Having money to throw is also relative and personal. Money is just one consideration. That's life.

The article is actually ironic. The author spends approx 2700 words talking about how wonderful Leica is, only to end with the statement in red below:
[Approx 2700 words explaining how wondering Leica is] .... But for many of us that shoot Leica gear, it's not about that. It's about the build quality, optical performance, consistency, simplicity and reliability of these tools that don't stand in our way, try to change our methods or thinking and let us concentrate on what matters most - getting the shot.

I'm not any pro or master at photography, but I can tell you one thing: really good photographers that focus on "getting the shot" do not waste time talking so much about their gear lor. We got some masters in RF.SG who can get the shot with a iPhone 4 or any simple camera. No matter how expensive your camera is, if you are not there at that decisive moment, you don't get your shot.

The reason why people discuss Leica so much is because there are Leica collectors, traders, speculators and marketeers. These people have different agendas and not necessarily advocate good photography.

You are right :)

I bought a Rolex I wanted with the money I sold my M9P and Lens for.... ( for what it's worth my ex Leica is with an avid / extreme Leica user shooting in Venice this very minute..... he'll get some great shots I know ) Very happy it went to such a nice person :)

Generally, I am satisfied with my GXR and Zeiss Ikon, along with my Zeiss and CV lenses. I only have an old Tele-Elmarit 90mm which has coating which has deteriorated substantially but still works. New Leica lenses are way too expensive for that extra 10% sharpness etc to justify the extra cost. Maybe I might grab a 50 Summilux or a 30 Summicron along with a Leica M9 in the far distant future if I am still in the M mount system but I just can't justify the cost otherwise.

I am an amatuer photographer, while I love to take photos it is very out of place for me to carry a big DSLR in the social settings that I attend. I want to look like a business man, not a photographer. So I bring a small camera to look normal but it must be the best of the best, money is no issue so I went Leica and have been very happy with it. I think with a Leica it also send a message to the professionals that I am very serious in my hobby and when I attend weddings or functions I don't do the wannabe things most amatuers like to do which I know usually made the professionals very angry inside, I think they are more angry towards those amatuers with the DSLR doing 'big actions' compared to people who stand quietly in the crowd with a Leica.
