Hi guys,

just started off DSLR photography and asking really a noob question here.

should we get a lenspen or microfiber cloth to clean our lense?

any brand of lenspen or microfiber cloth to recommend? i've search a few places just now but seems that lenspen brand lenspen is out of stock (alan photo and south-asia, while CP, john 3:16 already closed when i visit)

many thanks!

Hi, welcome to the photography.

IMO, i will use neither. A good blower would be a better choice for me.
But if you really have to use one of them, my choice would be a microfiber cloth. Just remember to wash it regularly.
No point cleaning your still with a dirty cloth. Haha..

just FYI, majority of these camera shops are closed on Sundays.

Welcome to CS :) You can also use the cloth that's used to clean spectacles. But better use a good blower to blow off dust 1st ;)

hi DellSuperman and madmartian,

thanks for the reply!

seems that a lenspen is not necessary to clean the lense..

so any recommendation on blower? ;)

Giotto (and other brands) Rocket Blower (looks like a rocket). But basically any other blower can do the job as well as long as the air is clean and focused.

Don't ever use the hairdyer.........................haha :bsmilie:
Those that comes free with lens cleaning kits are not good. Go get those with a big rubber pump that you squeeze with the palm ;)

I use both..... Lenspen for dust cleaning, cloth from harder rubbing/stain removing.....

How do you remove oily fingerprints or dried water spots?

Personally i would take lens pen as i have very good experience with it. No smudges.

I don't find it very likely that somebody is able to use neither unless he always shoots in very clean environment.

Any smudge, accidental fingerprint or even water stain is going to be impossible to remove with a blower alone :P

I use the blowers first, and then the brush that came with the lenspen for stubborn dust.

I use the lenspen on the glass and microfibre cloth on the body.

use lens tissues. I dont really like lenspen. Seems like it gets less and less effective after some usage.

wow, seems that everyone got different cleanning habit.. haha

difficult to decide..

liveevil: where can get lense tissue?

Almost all shops have it. I got mine from MSC. just ask them. It wont be on display.

Start off with a good blower like Giottos Rocket Blower. A cheap blower would definitely be made from a cheap rubber which will turn rigid after a period of time. Giottos rocket blowers are made of natural rubber and after years it's still soft.

A Brush is needed for you to brush off the sticky dust specks gently after trying with a Blower.

Later go for a Microfibre cloth for a full clean. Remember to get a good quality lens cleaning liquid like ROR.

To me all these three are mandatory and they compliment each other. I do carry a lenspen however during my travel to quickly clean any smudges or dust specks when I'm in a hurry.

liveevil: any idea how much and how many pcs per pack?
