Hi... i'm planning to set aside budget to get either 19-35 or 24mm lens... but not really sure of the quality and price range of Minolta or other third party lens... anyone can help me out with it?? ;p

on that note... would 19-35mm or 24mm be more useful and worth the money if i will only have money for one?

arigato :)

Hello, the minolta 20-35 3.5-4.5 is a great lens to get. I've use this lens and find that it's optical quality is very good. of couse it's best to have prime lens but to get all the prime lens will blow a hole in your pocket. considering the fact that you can shoot faster without having to change lens often, the 20-35 is a better deal. It depends on your style of photography and the subject you want to cover.

Where did you get your 20-35 from and how much did you pay for it?

It depends on your style. 24mm is more for street photography where speed (F2.8), bokeh and low light shooting are necessary. Despite all the talk about prime lens, what makes it attractive to me is the speed and the fixed focal length. With fixed focal length and being familiar with it in my mind, I spend my time looking at subject and can already frame the image in my mind. I only have to lift my camera up to my eye and click. I think before lifting my camera to my eye, not while looking at viewfinder. That's why its useful for street photography.

19-35 is a good lens too. Do tell me where you can get them from and how much it costs. It'll be good for landscape and perspective shoots.

colin, can u explain what is a perspective shot? Example? Thanks!

Hi Colin,

It's been a long time since I post something here.... :embrass: Sorry man, I've been very busy.

The 20-35 is available at Fotoguide formerly....But they have since wound up.It's like about 700-800+ SG dollar...The only complain was that it's min focusing distance is too far for my liking....0.5 cm.

TME : When I use this kind of wind angle lens, I'll prefer to compose my shots with a strong foreground....or....strong background. I like my pics to have good depth and not look so flat. The ability to focus close at wide angle really turns me on. That's why I swear by my trusty 24-50 f4 lens---> min focusing distance = 0.35

I hope wat I wrote here can be digested by you and all photographers.....

Pai seh if I sound too chimg....

hihi.. thnx for all the inputs...

any idea how would third part 20-35 fair? e.g. tokina?

I'm still using the tokina 19-35mm. bgt it at $525 2 years ago at CP, dunno the price now.

Feel plastiky and light, but quite a good lens overall. If you have enuf budget, go for Tokina 20-35mm f2.8.

Why need to focus so close? What do u use the wide angle for? I thought mainly landscapes, architecture and maybe casual holiday pics to take as much of the background as possible....

Sure thing! :D

Check out http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGall2.asp?catID=385

Perspectively is only possible with wide angle, to capture the 3 dimensions of the world we live in, in a 2D photograph. It creates dramatic results.

Thanks! Great shots... these are real pros.... the scanners they use must be really high power ones... shot on slide but the detail capture digitally is fantastic...

If you don't mind paying, you can subscribe to PhotoI at $28. This would cover the mailing fee. And, you can even get back-dated edition!!

If you don't wanna pay, can always go to neighbourhood film developing shopfront to see whether they have free copies of it. :)

Free sounds good... but I've never seen it before.... where can I get it? The distribution URL is down.... anyway $28 for a year is really quite cheap... is it a mag by HWZ? How's the quality? The English of HWZ reviews can be quite bad sometimes.....

What is HWZ? :dunno:

Anyway, it's quite hard to describe to you how it's like. Tell you what: since I study in NUS anyway and you live in clementi, maybe can meet out so that I can pass you the March edition of the PhotoI. Don't need it anymore anyway.
Or if you are going to the SEED tomorrow, then lagi better! Ha~! :D
