Hi,

I have kit lens (18-55mm) + lovely 50mm f1/8 for my 400D and currently no protection for these lens
Please advise which lens protector I should buy and how much roughly the price?

Thanks in advance.

do you mean UV filter?
For both lenses, Hoya should do fine unless u got cash to throw away.

out of topic awhile,

just wondering how do u find the performance diff of your 2 lenses ?

i thinkinh of the 50mm 1.8 II

mi oni got kit lens hee

Dun want to OT too much, but the 50 f1.8 is the most value for money lens. And I find that using a prime lens improves your composition a lot.

50mm 1.8 II is indeed a very sharp lens that I have at this moment.
Cheapo but sharp.

Don't use any filter. Save your $$.

No filter then how to protect your lens? :dunno:

Get a 58mm filter for your kit lens.

Don't need filter for the 50, because the front element is quite deeply recessed into the lens body. It's quite hard to get a fingerprint on it. It's relatively easy to do that with the kit lens though, which is why I get a filter for it.

Generally for the cheap glass I dont use any filter. Creates more problems like flaring and internal reflection.

yeah dude, i found that out the hard way

There is no real need for the 50mm to have a filter in front of it because the lens element is quite deeply recessed. Putting a filter on the 50mm could result in problems with the picture taken like ghosting and flaring.

If your lenses are cheap then there is no real point in getting protection for them, just remember to cap the lenses when not in use. If you get a cheap filter with a poor coating then your image gets affected. Good filters are not cheap and if it costs more than 10% of the price of your lens, may not be really worth it.

... sorry to "borrow" your thread like that ... but many "gao shou" around, so I would like to pop a question. I'm getting slightly underexposed pictures (same subject, same lighting) via my 50mm f1.4 then via the kit lense (both at f5.6) without flash, could it be due to the Hoya UV filter ?

Please make this a separate post.

UV Filters are clear. They don't (and shouldn't) affect exposure settings.

Thanks for your explaination. :)
I will let my cheapo 50mm without filter.
