Which Leica and CZ lenses have fantastic bokeh? The Noctilux bokeh really stands out for me based on what I have seen on flickr, but I don't think I will be able to afford one anytime soon. Anybody knows of alternatives?

The most notable ones for Leica are the 35mm Cron IV (4th Version) and the 75mm Lux. There are others like the 50mm Cron/Lux (pre-aspherical), the DR and the Thambar 90mm f2.2.

Zeiss has the Sonnar C 50mm f1.5 and the ZM 85mm f2 and quite a few for the Nikkor S Mount (35, 85 and 135.)

Bokeh is subjective and personal preference is your yardstick.

There are Hexanon 50f1.2 & 60f1.2 and Canon50f1.2(screw-mount). Hex60f1.2 is very similar to Naughtylux. I think the 50f1.2 should be similar as well. Canon is slightly softer and less contrasty.

Don't forget the UC-Hexanon 35mm and the M-Hexanon 35m! Supposed to be better than Cron IV, the King of Bokeh and with modern, updated coatings!

If you don't mind old LTM lenses, Leitz Summar 50mm f2 has very soft and nice bokeh. Stephen Gandy/CameraQuest said of this lens: "50/2 Leitz Summar (1933-1940): Universally disparaged, I think it's a treasure. These lenses give a wonderful semi-soft focus effect when shot at wide apertures with color film. Very beautiful, great for scenics, women, nudes, romantic images. All chrome collapsible lenses. Watch out for fogging and cleaning scratches. All left the factory without coating, though some were sent back to the factory for coating post war. "

and it costs no more than S$500 for a clean copy (that is if you can find one.)

contax G modified to M mount, better than ZM and leica M lens...;)

Personally, I actually prefer the 75mm summilux bokeh to the noctilux. no real good reason, just my personal preference.

Also the Noctilux at wide open aperture is a little soft so there does not seem to have as much separation between the subject and background as the summilux in my opinion. but the noctilux really is a unique look.

i just prefer the summilx

after my long (but probably limited) search for an equivalent in the rf world like minolta's
135mm STF "the king of bokeh" in slr world, i personally think the ZM 50mm f2 planar has
got the smoothest oof transitions.... leica's 35mm f2 4th version cron doesn't impress me at
all.... then again, it's a personal taste...;p

Where/Who to go to for this modification?

There's MS Optical in Japan but they don't take orders from overseas. I remember reading of another company in Japan that does it but I can't recall the name now. DAG Camera can modify Contax 16mm Hologons to fit the M mount. Wanted to add that if I'm not wrong, MS Optical rehouses the lens elements in a new lens barrel.

Don't know about bokeh but the pic seems to have dimension which is what we want in portraits. And it is not too harsh which is important for portraits.

I see that quite a few of you have the ZM biogom 2/35, how good do you think is the bokeh and shaprness compared to a Leica lens that you have used.

I am quite interested to know about the bokeh of the Summilux and Summicrons vs the Planar 2/50, the Biogon 2/35 and the Sonnar 1.5/50.

Besides Zeiss and Leica, do any of you have experience with the voigtlanders such as the Ultron 1.9/28 and the Nokton 1.2/35?

For bokeh, between the ZM 35 and the Cron IV 35, Cron IV 35. Between the Cron IV and UC-Hexanon 35, the UC-Hexanon.

For sharpness, between the Lux 35 ASPH and the Cron 35 ASPH up to around f4. Then it is the same. Between the ZM 35 and Cron 35, tough one. There is build quality, bokeh smoothness, contrast, color, warmth, etc

For other possible 35mm lenses, the one to get is the Nikkor 35mm (SP 2005 edition and needs mount). Another good alternative is the M-Hexanon 35mm.

Lenses known for smoothness in the bokeh for the 50mm FL is the Sonnar C 50mm f1.5 and the 50mm DR. The rest are all very good, especially the new 50 Lux ASPH. The Noctilux is considered as special, a notch above everything out there, but like all things subjective, some will love it, some will hate it.

Unless you put the exact pictures side by side, it might not make any difference.

Ultron 28/1.9 is an excellent lens. Slightly less contrasty than Leica 28mm both Elmarit asph & Cron. BTW, this excellent lens is discontinued-get it while you can. It's screw mount so can get adapter that can be coded for M8.

Hi Ricoh,
Agree with you, there is a depth that can be seen from the way her head and shoulders stand out from the background and the shape of her features. It doesn't look flat, maybe its the lighting. The picture seems to look warm or yellowish on my screen though. Wonder if its because of the lens or the scan. Pictures look nice without harsh contrast.

From the link, I could not tell the difference betwen the Summicron and the Biogon when someone posted a side by side comparision of the 2 recliners.
