Hi guys,i understand that the leica uv/ir filter is made for the digital m8 to compensate certain problems found in m8.with the new m9 on the market,i see many people selling their m8 to upgrade to a m9.i also realise people who sold their m8 is also selling off their uv/ir filter.my question is.why is everyone selling it?cant the uv/ir filter be use on normal analog leica or even the m9?what if a collector who owns more than 10 leica lenses using uv/ir filter who use to shoot with a m8 and now with a m9,does it mean that he needs to purchase more than 10 new normal filter for the lenses nw if he is shooting with m9 or other analog leica?

I've got more than 80 UV/IR filters including odd sizes like E19, E27mm, E34, A36, Summitar style, E40, E41, series5.5, series6. Got a lens that take 39.5mm filter & it's the only one I can't customize! That's why sticking to M8!!:bsmilie:

For me yes.. Sold all uv/ir and buy normal uv ... But for me ok .. I only got like 5 lenses . ;)

You do know why this is so right ? .. Why M8/8.2 needs the uv/ir ..

Some expert can correct me if I am wrong. The M8 and 8.2 did not have a good enough IR filter for the sensor, as a result all lenses needed to be fitted with a UV/IR filter. You can tell because the filters have a pinkish tint.

With the M9, Leica improved the IR filter for the sensor so the UV/IR filters are no longer required. Some people still use the normal UV (without the IR) filter but more for lens protection than anything.

The reason was on M8 and M8.2 Solms decided not to have the UV/IR filter infront of the sensor.. which most (all) manufacturer will incorporate in the Cameras. This is to filter off unwanted invisible lights.

Without the UV/IR .. all hells broke loss and the only solution that Solms has was also ingenius from a marketing point of view (technically it sucks BIG time.. Putting additional glass infront of a superb lens to degrade it.. man, if this was Nikon or Canon.. I think they will never hear the end of it) .. they proposed that owner use the UV/IR filter for the lenses. See they save money on incorporating the UV/IR filter and got the cheek to ask to you buy (ok lah ok lah .. all M8 and M8.2 comes with 2 free UV/IR filters, but like that's going to be enough) ..anyway ..

So when M9 came out they re-introduce the UV/IR filter back infront of the sensor .. and since they will not make money from filter anymore .. the price of M9 when crazy .. see also brillant marketing .. of course the poison to most (including me) was M9 is FF .. haiz

There you have it .. make you wonder why Leica user are such suckers

I Love Leica :bsmilie:

Just to add .. M8/M8.2 is very good for IR photography.. over at the IR sub-forum those poor soul (suckers) have to buy camera that has UV/IR incorporated and spent money to have it removed and replace a IR filter.

Lowlights, I like how you exaggerate the UV/IR issue. :bsmilie:
The truth according to our Mata, CactusJack is here.

Actually if I remember correctly, Leica themselves recommend using UV/IR filters for longer focal length lenses on the M9. I think it was 50mm and upwards or something like that.

Thanks to all the guys who responded positively. At the moment i think i better don't post any question to 'irritates' other member.

You cannot use UV/IR filter for analog color photo...

UV/IR on M9 is not recommended,
1st, any filter in front of lens can create potential flare, reducing picture quality somewhat due to the extra glass in front of the lens
2nd, UV/IR filter has green magenta reflection when seen and is ditracting for taking candid photos
3rd, More stuff in your camera bags, more stuff to lose

YES, the M9 still has some IR polution so you will need the UV/IR filter if your aim is ultimate color accuracy under tungsten light or heavy IR producing lights.

haiyo guys.

M3-M7 all full frame, no need UV/IR. Fraction of the price ;)

of course you have to enjoy the work flow of processing the film la......

I believe most of us are RF.SG members. Lets just try to remember the RF.SG rules lay down by chairman as well, gentlemen & ladies conduct ya?

Enzokoh: google seriously does help alot, if you are too lazy to read like me, youtube is the best. Video + sound, sometimes still got meimei do demo, cant say no to that.
