I've been shooting digital for the longest time and suddenly, it just hit me. I really want to get to the basics of photography and learn from scratch.

What would be a good price to pay for a new Leica MP and a summilux lens? The ones on EBAY are about 3000 USD?

I'm thinking more of either the 35mm or 50mm ASPH

Bought at Contax 645 with 80mm f/2 lens already. Can't wait to start shooting film.

Been shooting with a 5D mark II, 35L, 85L, and 135L and i absolutely love the glass and ease of use. But somehow it feels too easy. I take my shots for granted. Not nice? Delete. A little nice? Use photoshop and make it look nicer.

There's no kick to it. I want to take the time and compose my shots, make every shot count. Experiment with the different types of film, learn how to use the proper scanning techniques.

Shooting digital is just too easy and boring now.

So any advice on the MP and summilux prices would be much appreciated.:)

Sounds like it's pretty old since there's no warranty or anything. Probably looking at something new or near mint.

Aayo.. u want to shoot the difficult way? why buy MP.. MP auto exposure is too easy liao.

Buy a screw mount leica better, difficult to load, no meter, difficult to focuz, difficult to rewind, every shot confirmed count...;)

best of which, starter kit of a leica iiif with 50mm would be <$800.

Erm, I thought MP is like fully mechanical & fully manual?

For all things mechanical... esp stuff like Leica, I find that there is no real need to have to find mint/near-mint. Especially if you intend to really use it. And not buy, use it lightly, and intend to sell it next time.

Leica MP ( Mechanical Perfection ). We should be thankful leica included a meter inside, let alone give autoexposure.

Oh yeah... i always shoot Aperture priority. Would it be better to get an M7 instead?

hey, I feel insulted hor.. MP has no AE.
I need to buy you a leica book... :bsmilie:

well, my honest take: get the m6 if you want to get the leica experience and a voigtlander lens. dont waste too much $ into something unsure.. Have you tried RF before? It might not be everyone's cup of tea. Im not saying you, but I have seen people moving straight into RF and giving up because they find everything so slow. But like I've always thought: "if the old masters can do it, we can".

oh yes... I have contax 645 also.. very very awesome mf camera. I like everything about it

good luck for your buy! mp or m6, you cant go wrong

the MP is like the M6 (or the Bessa R?M), where is has metering, but not Aperture Priority mode. Only the M7 and M8? (or the Bessa R?A) have the A mode.

But iirc, the MP can work without any battery, minus the metering and displays. Unlike the M7, which only can run on a couple of shutter speeds (1/60 and 1/125) without batt.

M7 is good camera but cost the same as mp... but mp's view finder is brighter and no super loud red dot ;p

but any leica is a good leica honestly.

MP is a M6 in a DAMN sexy outfit
M7 is a M6 plus aperture priority

i'd go with a MP

If you want the HARD way, get a large-format. Confirm get you sweating and deliberating before you click the shutter for every shot. I've used a lot of cameras before, but LF really confounds me. I can't see the screen properly and the calculation for exposure compensation is really ARRRGHHH!

Seriously, it's the frame of mind when you're holding the camera. I'm not trying to sound Zen, but if your mind is open and free from distractions, you will be able to achieve great shots even on a DSLR.

Yes. I do have a Leica M7 and MP. I'm a badge whore! :)
