Leica M3 w/meter or Leica M6?

Given only one choice, would you choose to use (not collect) the Leica M3 with the meter, any meter or the Leica M6?

Any specific reasons for that? (eg. Comfort, Efficiency, Feel etc.)

Thanks for your opinions in advance!

M6ttl, and only because of the ease of the meter whilst framing your shot. If you get the M3 you will have to use a separate meter and its not as convenient or fast

Prefer the M6 because I prefer looking into the viewfinder to frame and get the meter reading. Also, the ttl metering means that it is much easier to use filters.

If I need a meter (doing shoot in varying lighting conditions), I will take the M6.
I will take the M3 for similar lighting conditions shooting...applying Sunny 16.

Just like cars... if you want to get from point A to point B, get a toyota. But if you want to FEEL the joy of driving, get a Alfa Romeo Spider 1966. :)

Both M6 & M3 are wonderful cameras, I personally prefer M3 for the weight and feel... :)

chiif has a good point. It depends on what you wanna do. however I would not liken the m6 to a toyota more like a mercedes....

I would go for a non-TTL M6. In fact I have one. :)

And consider the lenses u r going to shoot with. If you are going to shoot with 35mm, M3 may not be a good choice. Personally, i never like M6. M2 M3 M4 are my favorites ;)

Thanks for the opinions guys! I am quite new to the depths of the Leica system. I've looked through some interesting sets and I see that from my (unbiased I hope)webpages visits, more people are using the M6 and the rest are M3 Collectors.

But I noticed that the M3 had a distinctive "aura" that lures the eyes. ~.~

M3 -
Comfort: 0.91x viewfinder, uncluttered frameline 50/90/135 make shooting 50 & 90mm favourite.
Feel: The classic soul of Leica M, love the metal film advance and knurl knob rewind. Just Like MP.

M6 -
Convenient: TTL metering. Have more frameline than M3 28/35/50/75/90/135

M6 classic
Efficiency: convenient of TTL metering with bigger easier to turn shutter speed dial in the same direction like classic M2, M3, M4 & MP

M6 TTL
Efficiency: convenient of TTL metering with bigger easier to turn shutter speed dial direction in line with the metering arrow just like M7, M8 & M9

:)

I 'll take the M7. Bro not sure if you played with film before but it burns quite a hole. 200bucks + the trouble.. monthly. maybe more or less.. I use good film and fotohub .... so....
So if you conside all this in a M8 might be a better choice.

cos 2k more than M6 but might be worth the $$$ in long run.

I am thankful for the short but enriching descriptions on all the bodies! I have not noticed that there is a "M6 Classic" I thought it falls in the "M6" genre only! Thanks!

Yeah I did some thinking about it... ventured on into film because I enjoy the feel of the film winder, the chemicals in the darkroom and the winding of the film lever.. I had considered Digital on one of those daydreaming sessions in random bus rides.. However I can say the grains of the film are very attractive to me:sweat:

It's like when you are in your teens.. and you compared David Copperfield to Archie Comics.. you want to change books and wonder why the pages flipped so slowly but ultimately you enjoy the richness of the texts.. ;)

Okay I think the previous paragraph is misleading..

Do also consider a M4 if you want the hefty feel of a vintage Leitz without the limitation of framelines of the M3 =)

But if modern conveniences are what you want for daily shooting, an M6ttl or even a M7 will be very good tools. There's also Zeiss Ikon, Voightlanders and Konica Hexar to consider if the Leica marque is not a priority.

What is your main reason for you to buy Leica RF?
With your R3A & 40mmf1.4 you are able to take lots of good pictures.
Save $$$ buy 1-2 lenses. Leica M 1,2,3,4,5,6 & 7 are all film body.
What make the pictures like different are the lense and the person
behind the viewfinder. If u work with b&w meter doesn't matter too much.
If you like to do street. Always pre-meter as you go along.
Dun spoil the hobby. Gears can come later once you are much ready.
Just my 2 cent. :)

Ah, I was considering it after 1-2 years time. I had been looking at these two models for quite a while and was curious about this. Definitely lens would come first! :)

I have a M8 and M3 and love the M3 for the old solid feel and 0.91 VF! Thinking of getting a M6 too as a third film bodies for the built-in meter. Frankly, you will never have enough Leica. I would suggest getting a M6 as a first body for the convenience of built-in meter. You will eventually buy more M bodies. M3 is a must-have! And to some a M2 too for the uncluttered framelines.

for your needs, I would get the MP. The beautiful mechanical feel of the M3 with the convenience of a built in meter of the M6. If you can stretch the budget an MP3 would be perfect if you want the looks of an M3 as well.

agree, the mp is much more solidly built than the M6 (which is also nice) and has a much clearer viewfinder.

Coming from an ex-MP user, I do agree that it's a solid piece of machinery. However, a M6 can do what the MP can do at almost half the price. I will get a M6 as a user body and keep an MP for collection.

I think M7/M9 is a lovely combination =)
