Leica Glow on Pre ASPH Summilux

Dear All,

I am just wondering if there is a following of bros here who acquired or wants to acquire the Pre ASPH Summilux for its know Leica Glow. I am using on at the moment, version 2, 1979 made and just got CLAed by Mr Tay recently.

I know its a lens of its own character and would seek advise on how to maximize its character in terms of when to use it to shoot, for what specific purpose you really use it wide open and probably, on the subject of flares which is seemed quite common in this lens.

Just an open and objective discussion here if any? I am using mine on the Fuji X-E1 at the moment, I am also having the XF 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens using it for general shooting for clinically sharp and modern rendering like kinda shots (like the modern ASPH FLE Summilux).

Thanks

It's only a matter of time before you get the FLE la xD

Someone selling in the BNS... Very good price!

Saw your posting of some of your photos. Think it is still not achieving the Leica sharpness and glow. Your "Glow" seems to be a bit blur for the whole picture. The subject in focus should be quite sharp (especially with your non-AA X-E1), with other areas blurred out.

Maybe it is still not in focus or its camera shake? Have you tried shooting with a tripod?

A matter of a long long time... LOL

Havent yet... Think my technique still need practising... Tks for pointing out... Cheers. Really must take some time next week to use tripod to test both the XF 35 & Lux 35. I cant afford the FLE now... Keke... So no point looking at BnS... :bsmilie:

think try it at home bah. easier to test.

put couple of items on desk , use tripod and do magnify focus.

sorry for being dense, what is FLE ?

Floating lens element. Te ASPH lux has focus shifting when changing apertures. The floating lens elements helps to counter this shift in focus.

Basically add Abit more stuff to make it MUCH more expensive xD

Yeah. But oso. D key difference of FLE n non FLE asph lux is during close distance shooting, d images r sharper on d FLE version as claimed n reviewed by many.

Even d price shows it rite? Not very big difference between them too. Haha.

Anyway. Just get d FLE since its d latest n think resale value stays great. I'm not a Leica aficionado. Gotta check wif d RF experts in this forum.

The glow is chroma. If you want more glow, aim it at damn shinny objects and shoot B&W.

Haha... The thing is I want to know how to maximize d usage of this glow to make the picture looks pleasingly great... Sometimes the glow can be over the top and doesnt looks appealing. Anyone got any shots using this lens and can share? Thanks.

The glow comes really because it is a defect of the lens. IF you really want to see it glowing like nuts, you must shoot where there's high contrast in lighting, like when it is very dark or bright.

Some shots with my 35 lux pre-asph, all wide open. I modded mine for 0.7m close focus which is evident on the M8 shot.

on film

TriX-400

Agfa 400

on M8

glows most on contrasty/bright scenes.

Yes, the glow is a lens defect.

Many Leica die hard fans called it glow or coma, just because they cant stand their top brand having a defect. :bsmilie:

Anyway, if you do not shoot wide open, it shouldnt affect you. The pre asph lux is one of my fave 35mm lux, small & compact in size. Currently RF lenses are huge as they have to accomodate the glasses in it which are correcting the previous flaw, thus the huge size.

I think sharpness/resolution of lenses are over rated. No point chasing the latest for the best resolution, the sharpnes. Honestly, please show me some hands, how many people here actually print larger than A2?

Yeah... awesome little compact lens that does a good job in terms of contrast n sharpness if u stopped down to f/2.8. I supposed the way it renders differently from the modern sharp lenses like Zeiss, CV or modern primes lenses can be harnessed for a different kinda looks in some phtographs which I am still exploring. Cheers.

Faint, I know people who send their lenses in for calibration to avoid this Leica glow. :bsmilie:

The glow and low contrast is very apparent at f1.4. You see a sharp drop in the contrast on the film. Shot on 35lux pre asph.
