Thinking of picking up a Leica M6 with a 40mm summicron. but then I am seeing all sorts of lenses around, makes range, length etc etc......any one can point me to a place when I can pick up more information? thanks.

Why 40mm? I'm sure you are aware the Leica M6 doesn't have the frameline for this focal length? Of course, this has not stopped some people from using this combo.

You should be able to find more info in the photo.net Leica forum's archives.

Read somewhere that the 40mm offers quality close to 35 mm 4th version without the premium. :dunno:

It's true. A minolta M-Rokkor 40mm f2 lens can be gotten for a fraction of any Leica 35mm summicron and yet it is every bit as good as the summicron. All is needed is a bit of filing on the mount to bring up the 35mm frame line (not very difficult really  )

TMC, its not a rangefinder, but perhaps you might want to consider the Leica CM P&S - its 40mm Summarit lens is considered better than the 40mm Cron for the CLE, and almost on par with the 35 ASPH. From my own experience, its almost indistinguishable at F5.6 from the 35ASPH, except it has smoother bokeh.

Just my curiosity, but can you really see much of a bokeh with a 35mm lens at f5.6?

If you're getting the 40mm Summi-C, try and get one with a hood as it uses an unusual thread pitch. The hood is quite essential for this lens as it can flare like hell. Other than that, i think its a good compromise between 50mm and 35mm (I was never too settled with either of them) and a really sharp and cheap lens to boot! I got mine for about 400SGD.
