My auntie recently passed me a Konica M-Hexanon 90mm f2.8.

I went to do some read up about it and found out that it can actually be used on a Leica M mount. The thing is, I am quite confused. How many mounts does Leica have? Cause i tink they have a 39mm mount as well right? (Sorry, I am not too familiar with Leica ;))

And most importantly, what RF do I need to buy in order to mount this lens?

And does anyone know if i can get an adapter to mount it on either canon or nikon?

Hope to learn some stuff here from you RF gurus. :D

You can give it to me.

Leica has 2 mounts, Screw Thread Mount and the M Bayonet Mount. You one you have is the latter.

You need an RF with the Leica M mount, like Leica M3/2/4/4-2/4-P/5/6/7/8/8.2 or the Voigtlander Bessa R2/3/4 and other cameras with the M-Bayonet mount.

Adapters, unlikely. If so, very scarce and super rare.

You can give it to me. Ahahahahah.

Typically Leica rangefinder has 2 mounts: 1) M39 (screw mount or LTM) 2) The current M-mount (a bayonet mount).

You can mount your lenses on any camera that has a m-mount like the CV Bessa R2~R4, current Zeiss Ikon, Konica Hexar and Leica M2~M8. (ranging from the most affordable to the most expensive)

the screw mounts are the older vintage cameras and bodies. else, most of the current production bodies available in the market are m-mounts - many of which have been covered above.

as for adaptors, part of the beauty of rangefinders is they are compact and discreet. this comes through eliminating the mirror box of SLR cameras, bringing the rear element closer to the film plane. this shorter flange distance compared to the SLRs would not make it possible to fully utilize a rangefinder lens on a SLR. i have seen m-r adaptors, but it acts like an extension tube, making the lens only good for macros.

on a slightly separate note, just in case anyone brings it up. there are leica m visoflex to N or C adaptors available, but these are for the old visoflex lenses or ones with removable heads, of which the 90hex is unfortunately not one of them.

The Hex 90mm is a lovely petite piece of work, especially for its price.. don't ever let go of it.

My advice ? Just get a M-mount camera to complement it , and join the world of M-mounts and LTM mounts.. and life will never be the same again ;)

thanks for all the replies! Now I finally understand!

Guess I need to get a Bessa R3a/R2a soon. ;)

Also, can a Konica Flash HX-18W be used on a Bessa? Or only on the Minolta CLE?

If this is the only M lens you are going to own for a while, get the R3M or R3A to start off with.

As long as the flash can be fired with the normal hotshoe, it will work the bessa. :)

I agree with Chiif to get a Voigtlander. The Konica flash should work with the Minolta too. I have used an el-cheapo sunpak with no issues.

I would not recommend the Minolta CLE if you are thinking to get one for the Hexanon 90 f2.8 I used to have one and I have problems focusing with the Leica 90mm f2. I think it is because of the short RF baseline of the CLE, which affects accuracy with longer lens with big aperture @ wide open. Den again, it could be just my eye :P
