HI,

I'll be going to Jakarta for 3D2N. Any good place for heritage/culture or people shoot? Also, is it possible to have sunset/sunrise shooting in Jakarta?

Hi Lewissac,

For heritage shoots, you can try:
- The Old City of Jakarta (Kota Tua Jakarta or Batavia). Kota is Indonesian word for "city", it was the reminiscent of the vicinity during Dutch colonial times in 16th century that the city was only within Batavia walled compound (today Kota).
- Gedung Arsip National
- Cathedral Jakarta

Here are the Wiki link:
- Kota, Jakarta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
- Gedung Arsip Nasional - Wikipedia bahasa Indonesia, ensiklopedia bebas
- Jakarta Cathedral - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think that will occupy your 3D2N :) I'm not really familiar with the sunset / sunrise shooting tho.

As my usual travel advice to Jakarta, don't be flashy, and try to get a local guide or friend if possible.

Hope it helps. Cheers and enjoy your trip.

Thanks for reply, SilentSeth.

Unfortunately, this is my Backpack trip. So I'm all alone. Mainly going for experiencing their cultures since I never been there before. Also for Photo-shoot of course.

totally agree... don't be flashy, the train station in Kota is one spot you wont want to miss...

Not a good idea IMHO, you will most probably have bad experience rather than having a pleasant time. Jakarta is far from the safe environment of Singapore. Carrying expensive looking photography equipment only makes it worse. Best would be get a few friends both from Singapore and Jakarta to do an outing.

The sites that Silentseth pointed out are quite good, for those are among the points of cultural interest in Jakarta. You can also visit Taman Mini if you want to see Indonesia and its culture represented in one place. Pelabuhan Sunda Kelapa is also a very interesting albeir dangerous place to take photos.

Hmm.. maybe I'll just grab my prosumer camera instead of my dslr for travel to Jakarta. Lol didn't know Jakarta is such a "flashy" attraction country.

There is a flashy part of Jakarta and also lots of unsafe area around Jakarta, especially at night. Please ask about safe and unsafe area on your hotel concierge before go on your shooting session. I do not recommend you to take public transportation if you bring an expensive camera and you looks like singaporean. Chinese especially.
The best taxi company is Blue Bird. Take more time to get Blue Bird rather than taking another and treated bad lately. I do not have any corelation with blue bird and there is no blue bird taxi in my city. I just want to share my experience and hoping my friend from Singapore safely completed photo trip to Indonesia.

Try to enroll your membership on www.fotografer.net. It's Indonesia's biggest photography forum. Indonesian use ID to register. If you did not suceed to get the membership try to message the webmaster if they can allow you to join. A lot of fotografer.net member will be willing to answer your question and lots of young Indonesian speak english.

The second forum is www.kaskus.us. It is general discussion forum but they have a very active photography section.

Cheers

If u r chinese then u should get xtra caution. If u r angmoh then people will smile for u and u can bring dslr to take their picture

sad fact but i personally feel the same. (i might be wrong tho)

Hi lewissac,
You have made a great choice to shoot in Jkt, I spent one year in Jkt and had the BEST shooting experience of my life!!!
Imagine each time u wanna shoot, people smiling at you and asking you to shoot their friends too, ever had that in Sin? Fat hope
Seek out Fotographer.net for their GTG if you are lucky, groups of 50 pax walking around, who dares to stop you, rob your cam?
Call me if you need more info, cheers

I just booked a hotel in Thamrin. Not sure if it's the right place to stay there. I'm still unsure the traffic ard there. Anyway departing tomorrow! Wish me luck! :)

O.0 I'm chinese? They dun like chinese? :(

they are by default nice people and don't really love/hate any particular race, but their low education level and the country's bad social conditon make them easily persuaded or "being used" to do bad things.

been here in Jakarta for 4 years, on & off. the city definitely isn't built like Sg, you'll need your transportation instead of relying too much on public transport. if you take taxi, choose the blue bird or silver bird. the city has its charm & annoyances. if Sg is a 'toyota', Jkt is an "old italian car" - exciting when it works. like mentioned, best if you have local guide.

thamrin is cbd area. there is a statue, that is a photo object for local photogs, usually there will be some on saturday & sunday evening.

ancol is the seaside, if the weather is fine, sunset is possible. but the water is not nice, v.dirty.

plan your itinerary, but be prepared to change your plan due to traffic, weather etc. etc. don't get frustrated if things don't work, remember it's no Singapore :bsmilie:

dSLR is fine but of course be careful; try to blend in and avoid being flashy. if you're by yourself, use a prime or normal zoom. if you're canon user, use less of those gray lenses :) . if you're pentax user, the 40mm XS is best :D

Thanks for the advice.
I'm intending to bring my G11 instead of the heavy DSLR. It's still a good camera though :) Anyway just quick qn. roughly how far from airport to Thamrin? Hw much would the taxi fare be roughly ard?

My most important concern is the traffic jam. Haha.. Especially on Sun. Cuz my flight departs ard 5+. So I should start leaving by 12 and allocate 5 hrs jam stuck? LOL

Just now I did a check out and found that there is airport Shuttle from Jakarta Airport to Major Hotel in Sudirman and Tahmrin Street. Wonder would that good as well?

if you arrive on friday morning, it may take 1-1.5 hrs to your hotel. i usually take silver bird, they have their own taxi stand and no touting, but more expensive, kinda our merc or chrysler cab. perhaps it'll be around IDR 250-300k + IDR 12k for the toll expressway.
sunday will be lighter traffic. you can leave hotel about 2pm.

iirc, the cbd area on sunday morning will be car free, and there'll be lots of people exercising, bikes etc. you may wanna check with the concierge. can be a 'street photography' opportunity.

Thanks! Im arriving in the afternoon. O.0 200-300K seems pricey for me.
Anyway how abt Xtrans shuttle bus? I check it's cheaper but longer journey? Is it reliable too?

i've never taken the bus, dont know how it is

many people from Malaysia and s'pore come to Bandung, there is flight directly to bandung, it's around 2,5 hours from jakarta
many place with beautifull view like mountain at ciwidey area, hot spring at ciater and lake at ciwidey
if you shopperholic you can buy branded clothes and shoes with cheaper price (they call it factory outlets) many shops there
Bandung more safer than jakarta
:)
