it pays to carry around a camera...

I am surprised how much easier it
is now to approach strangers to capture
a picture, even in our culture.

Of course, carrying a RF is slightly easier
as it is quite compact compared to a DSLR
and it doesn't lag like a P&S.

here are some examples from 2012:

Example #1
========
I was stepping off the taxi going into
Mandarin Oriental when I saw this Bride
waiting for the wedding photographer.
I said "So Pretty", she smiled and I
took this shot.

Leica IIIf with 50 Summicron.
Film is Kodak Tri-X 400.
Exposure was way off, corrected in
post processing.

Example #2
========
i was in Nex Mall, and I spot this mother
with baby. I asked her if I could snap
a picture, and she said yes.

Tri-X 400, M2 with 35 Cron.

Example #3
========
I was Dhaka going to see a difficult client.
Next to the building there were these 2 women and their kids
begging by the road-side. i zone-focused at f11 (i think) and quickly snapped a shot
without framing.

Epson R-D1 with Nokton 35/f1.4

I like the first one best. It's really rewarding to have a camera with you when the decisive moment happens. Sadly, my working place does not allow any camera.

when i was working in stockholm, most of the photos i took were on the way to office/home by train. Now too bad, driving kills most of shooting opportunities.

awesome I too when possible bring a camera with me who knows what you ee along the way :-).

I am also trying out film for a very long time since I used one :-) see how it goes I like the tri-x grains using it now with my SLR. continue to post bro nice shots

The bride shot stands out for me. Nice one raytoei!

Love the first shot... great job

Decided to include picture of men in case you think i am a stalker of women...

prayer-a.jpg

this was like 5.30am on an Emirates flight to Islamabad Pakistan.

Three guys walked to the middle of the plane and started a call to prayer.

Soon it was joined by a whole lot of men and women who queued up

and took turns to pray.

I didn't care, i snapped away.

Nice pics. The mum+babe one is good.

(I think ) for such shots, the camera must not look intimidating or so big that it turns people off. Flash should never be used.
Camera must be silent when taking the shot.
Digital camera must be turned on or power-up sequence must be very fast. If film camera, no need to wait. Wind and shoot.
Focusing must be near instantaneous or pre-focused. Shutter lag must be very short.
Extreme high MP resolution in such candid photos is not important. (no need for 36 MP)
Catching that fleeting moment or expression is very important.
Taking the shot must be instant. Once you have to fumble around with the camera for more than 10 seconds, the subject feels uneasy or unconsciously "pose" for you, then the candidness is lost.
Use optical viewfinder instead of the LED screen.

It is good that you ask permission.

Actually don't have to think so much, just shoot. :D
