Hi all Final Cut and Canon expert out there

This may not be a new issue, but I can't find solution after searching various forums and internet sites. Some site claim issue resolve but unstable. Hence need some help/guidance.

When I connect my Canon XHA1 to the MacBook Pro via Firewire, my Final Cut Pro 6 is unable to detect Canon XHA1 when both the software and camera are set to HDV mode (have tried various framerate and resolution and I have confirmed that my footages are all shot in 1080/50i HDV mode). However, when I switch both to PAL-DV mode, Final Cut is able to detect the camera. Hence I am "forced" to downgrade and capture my footages in SD mode so as to edit them in Final Cut Pro 6.

Has anyone encountered and resolved this issue? Can share the solution? Otherwise should I address it via Canon or Apple/Final Cut Support team? My Final Cut is version 6.04. Thanks.

Hi Vincent, it works perfectly fine for me.. it has never been a problem for me..
Whats your exact settings?

I'll always double check my camera playback settings to HDV and that the camera is off when I connect anything. On the FCP side, I've to check later (i'm in office)

Hi

Thanks for responding. I'm glad that at least this is not a common problem to all. To be exact, I will hook up the whole system again tonight (ensuring that the camera is off before connection) and capture the full setting for posting. Roughly in my mind from my last try, the settings on camera and the FCP Easy Setup is HDV 1080 50i.

If you are ok, do share your setting so that I can try it out tonight. Who knows, it may work. Appreciate your help.

Rgds

check your camera's firewire output settings. Make sure you don't output downconverted signals.

Thanks. Yes, I have checked earlier and it was not downconverted signals. In fact, I have ever captured .M2T HDV format footages using Pinnacle Studio 11 (my earlier editing SW) with Canon XHA1 and it was not an issue. Just puzzling why the same camera setting couldn't be detected by FCP. Thanks.

bro, I had the same prob with a rental unit previously. MY PC couldnt detect it in HDV mode. I was told some A1 has this prob then but didnt investigate.

Hi Hobbes

I have tried again last night and I was surprised that it can detect now. I have only tried switching the "Playback Std" from Auto to HDV and it could now be detected with FCP set to 1080/50i. I'm surprised as I had tried all settings previously and failed. I will try again tonight to ensure that the setup is stable.

However, the pain now is that I have to re-captured the hours of footages of my current projects to HDV format and reconnect the Sequence files to the media (hopefully not much an issue...) I would like to have both HD and SD format to play with as I plan to cut all videos in SD format for current DVD format while waiting for Blueray disc/player to hit consumer price and recut them in HD where needed. Thanks again.

Thanks bro for the sharing. Surprisingly it works now. I'm still investigating what have I changed since the last failure.

Hi vincent, there are 3 modes of playback...

STD
AUTO
HDV

You have to set it to HDV to get a proper signal. It isn't a camera fault, it was meant to be like this... The problem sets in when we set to "AUTO" and presume it should work..

How is it now?
Oh, do you rent your camera? (I'm shooting a short film and might want to do multi-cam)

Hi Dav

Thanks for the info again. Seems stable now and I will put it to more capturing work this weekend (as I need to re-capture all the footages for my current project) and monitor its stability. Will probably fix it at HDV.

Have PMed you on the camera subject. Thanks.
