My guess on this is that the sales of Wdws 7 & 8 are not rosy.
They cannot make enough XP / XP Pro users upgrade.

Possibility #2:
Microsoft has huge staff and operating overheads. They need to raise money.

I wouldn't call this suicidal since they are already dead in my books. More like another nail to the coffin.

why pay for crab when have free and good and virus proof! Linux is the way to go .

many here are Linux users unwittingly. Android runs on a Linux overlay . . .

I wouldn't bet my life on M$ bankruptcy..
the price is in line with previous versions of windows..
$200 is nothing considering you only upgrade the OS at least once every 2-3 yrs
compare that price with your phone's, camera's, etc..
