Is my A1 too noisy?

Haven't used ISO400 until this week and some of pictures didn't turn out too good (quality wise). Can somebody tell me is the noise level on my A1 too much, or is it standard?

#1: ISO400, Super Fine Jpeg.

#2: ISO100, super fine jpeg

#3: ISO 400, super fine jpeg. day shot, partially cloudy weather.

If my A1's noise level is too high, does my warranty allow for them to change it for me?

its a matter of choice ... used to own the predecessor 7Hi, I personally find it too noisy for my liking especially when you send the pix for enlargement. However, my buddy uses the same cam and the noise level does not bother him at all ... all down to yourself buddy ...

It bothers me for shots iso400 and above but is this standard level or can the service centre do something about it

Bear in mind that staring at a image@100% isn't the normal form of usage for such images. Most 5MP or more digicams exhibit such a degree of noise at ISO400, but they should be pretty acceptable when downsized, denoised(via software) or printed.

Hmmm mine is also noisy at 400. Do let us know if KM can do anything about it. Thanks.

Based on the comments I read so far, A1 IS noisy from ISO400 onwards.

Yes. I have encountered this as well. I don't think this is some kind of fault but more of a "inability". I have printed some of these pictures on 8R through Fuji Frontier machines and it really looks much better printed out then viewed on screen. I try as much as possible not to use ISO 400. Normally, I head straight for ISO100 or 200 at most and use F2.8 to compensate. :)

Yes the A1 is noisy and it is also true that it somewhat is better when printed out. Noise Ninja is effective in reducing the noise for A1.

All non-DSLR digicams are noisy at ISO 400 and above. Some are noisy even at 200. This is normal behavior, and there is nothing the service center can do, except sell you a DSLR :)

This is due to the small sensor size ( smaller sensor=>smaller photosites( pixels )=>lower signal strength=>higher noise to signal ratio=> higher noise ). The only solution :

1. Use only low ISOs.
2. Use Noise Ninja to remove the noise on your PC.
3. Use a DSLR, which gives low noise at the same ISO.

applauded :cheergal: I like the 3rd answer best. :bsmilie:

Thanks for all the replies guys. Guess now I will have to use a noise reduction program now.

Hi tmc17479,

You may want to consider to use Neat Image to get rid of the noise.

Neat Image

The above software is distributed as freeware for non-commercial use.

Hi YMun

Yup, installed Helicon based on your post.....Helicon is really terrific !

Reduces the noise level from most digicams. What's great about this software is that it allows the user to set his own level of noise reduction.

By the way, any idea if this software has batch processing ? If not, I'll have to adjust the noise levels of each photos individually....

Hi RayChan.

Nope, this free version does not allow batch processing. The Pro version, which the developer is currently working on, will have this function.

Cheers!
