I tried googleing this but cant find the answer

I hv a AVHCD camcorder and i love the fact that i can have HD video files without the big storage space I need. Best !

so now i am looking for a PnS camera... and as you may know few models of Sony and Panasonic have AVCHD or AVCHD lite for their videos.

I researched further and see that Samsung and Canon states their camera movie files are format of H.264 compression

are there the same ?? I was told they cannot use the term AVHCD due to legal issue.. ?

pls help.. thks in adv :)

AVCHD files are h.264 but not all h.264 files are AVCHD.

thks for the inputs.. yah i googled and read about it.. seems not a very direct answer for this question...

Canon and samsung camera is using H264 now for their PnS and if its similar to AVCHD then i can widen my selection...

will read more. Anyone got more input pls feel free to help out . Thks again

There's an interesting guide from B&H photo. Take a look.

http://hdslr.bhphoto.com/Guide.php?chapter=1#chapter=2

From one if the articles explaining different compressions:
H.264/AVCHD
"All Canon HDSLRs use the H.264 codec while the Pansonic offers an AVCHD option, which is a subset of H.264, applying a limited selection of the compression techniques specified in the full H.264 standard. Because of the H.264's predictive compression, fast-moving objects or panning across a frame quickly can produce artifacts in the image. Either technique is theoretically capable of better results for the bitrate than MJPEG."

ok guys... i cant say much about video quality as no one really do much compare and one shld not really dig too deep on video quality on a PNS camera (but if u can, than good to know & make decision)

What i did is to see the memory the video recording takes. The whole reason for me to get a AVCHD camera is mainly to save HDD space (MPEG is just a real killer).. I will be using this PnS as a camcorder too, as I just cannot bring so much with my kids already driving me nuts in holidays :P

For the benefit of all that has my idea of using a PNS , here is what i gathered:
