IR queries

Hi IR enthusiasts, I wanna experiment on IR and have some queries:

1. Is there a difference when a Hoya R-72 is used compared to Cokin P007?

2. I inquired in some shops and the Hoya R-72 for my lens (18-70) is not available. So I am thinking of getting a Cokin but it is quite troublesome to cut it to fit your lens. What is the reason of having it uncut instead of having it already in a fixed size like the Hoya? Isn't it a waste because once you have cut it according to your lens, you won't be able to use the remaining portion?

3. Is there anyone here in CS who provides the service of cutting the Cokin instead of me buying the tools needed just to cut it?

Thanks for your time! :D

Yes, there is a different betweem Hoya R72 and Cokin P007. The Cokin allow more visible light to pass through and will have more saturation. (See attached)

The 18-70mm lens I presume from Nikon is 67mm, why not try to cut it to 77mm and get a step-up ring from 67mm to 77mm, you can avoid wastage and also cater for a lens with larger diameter. The reason that the Cokin P007 is a square resin piece instead of a round piece which can be screw on top of the lens is because of the Cokin filter system has an adapter for square filter. However, this is not advicable for shooting IR because of light leakage from the side.

3. Is there anyone here in CS who provides the service of cutting the Cokin instead of me buying the tools needed just to cut it?
Hmm... Not too sure, can't really help on this.

Thanks for your time! :D

Hi Francis,

Thanks for taking time to clarify my doubts.

67 mm R72 filter is rather a popular one, you can ask the shop to order the filter for you, it should not take long for your waiting.

anyway, Seng Cheong, is the local Distributor for Hoya filters, you can call them up to find out which camera stores has the stock for 67 mm R72 filter.

hope this help.

Can try to go to and ask for the 67mm Hoya IR filter:

1. TK photo (Shaw Tower @ Beach Rd, 2nd floor)
2. SIM LIM Square 6th floor (Can't remember the shop name liao)
3. TCW @ Peninsula Plaza
4. MS Color @ AMK hub (I think is 2nd floor)
5. Cathay Photo (to me, this is the least desire place to go to, 'cos even if they have, their prices are always on the high side due to their "professional advice")

Thanks guys! Bought the IR filter form Cathay already. Slightly more expensive compared to TK but TK does not have stock.

Will now experiment IR on my D200. While reading the forums, I just realized that this cam is not very IR-friendly. Doh!

Oh well, will just do with what I have.
