Investment for film photography

Hi everyone,

I have a few quick questions for you experts out there. Currently, I'm looking at starting film photography (getting a RF, most probably Yashica Electro 35). Just want to ask a few questions about the expenses for film photography:

1) How much does a black and white film cost on average?
2) How much does it cost to develop an entire roll?
3) Is there a way to choose individual pictures to develop instead of the entire roll?
4) If I need to crop some of the pictures, which is the best way to do it?
5) Are there any other financial investment that I might be unaware of?

1. From abt $2 can get a roll of ASA 100 Lucky B&W film.
2. From abt $3 can develop an entire roll.
3. Its only abt $3 for the entire roll.
4. Scan the picture and crop it.
5. Buying better quality film which cost more.

AFAIK, the cheapest is $3 per roll . from chiif.

For lucky Films.

I use Tri-X which cost about 4 dollars something and sometimes Delta 3200, which costs six damn dollars.

I develop the film myself, saves a lot of money.

not an expert, but here are you $0.02 of sharing...

1) aside from the lucky100, you should try using tri-x, delta400, hp5, xp2 for iso400 b&w film, these are about $4.50-$6 per roll (iirc). quite a few ppl like to shoot lucky100, pushing to 400. this would have implications on your development cost as well (if you do not self develop).
2) if yo go to the shop, the options are usually "develop only", "develop and scan", and "develop and print". prices may vary depending on the resolution of the scan (hi-res / low-res), and the type of printing they do (digital prints / enlarger prints).
3) development has to be the whole roll. prints - you can "develop only" and print only those you like. alternatively, scan them at home, and print them as digital prints.
4) easily done in the digital process, scan hi-res and crop. if you're looking for enlarger prints, must do it in your own darkroom.
5) you may not like the scans produced by teh shops, and may want to get your own scanner. somewhere to keep your slides / negatives. i save a shelf in my dry cabi for them.

1) In the mean time while you are shooting with the B&W, you can keep a look out for expired B&W films. They are just as good if it was well stored. You can get Tmax, TriX for abt $2-3/roll. If you find that you have developed a liking for a particular film (for eg Tri-X) in the long run, you can do bulk rolling to save cost. The down side is the cost of the bulk loader. Best is that you have friends who has it and can lend it to you.

5) You may end up getting more and more rangefinders in time to come. ;p

Online, its possible to find $2 - $2.50 per roll, but $3 isn't much also.

i seem to remember paying $5 a roll for TriX when I bought 10 rolls some time back. $5.50 for Delta400.

Or maybe I remember wrongly. Dun like to recall money that was spent. Makes me sad. :bsmilie:
