Insurance

Hi!

Does anyone of you actually insure your Leica system against thief or damages? As a set of camera body with 4 lenses can mean a lot of money to purchase. I wondered if there are any insurance companies willing to take up this business.

There is no equipment protection insurance available in Singapore.

Wow, not even as part of home and contents insurance?
No. Standard home insurance covers standard items of average value (e.g. tv, stereo, PC etc) up to a certain level. High price items and luxury articles are not covered due to the capping of value.
If you use your equipment professionally then there are other forms of insurance.

I see.
In Australia, as I don't use my equipment professionally, I put it under my home and contents insurance, as specified items.
I was surprised that in Singapore, these things could not be insured. I thought that almost anything could be insured these days (body parts included!)

From what I understand from a friend who works in a local insurance broker, yes, almost anything can be insured. My guess is that Singaporeans are familiar with mass-market off-the-shelf insurance products, but remain unaware of the fact that there are some brokers/insurers that will be able to insure almost anything in a customized policy.

Here's one example which looks like it would cover personal camera equipment – Chubb Masterpiece Valuable Articles:

In the unfortunate event that your cherished valuables are lost, stolen or damaged, the last thing you want to hear from your insurer is that they are not insured for their true value.

Chubb’s Masterpiece insurance is designed to provide the best protection available for your most valuable possessions, including:
fine art/antiques
jewellery
wine collection
rare books
manuscripts
silverware
furs
china and crystal
musical instruments
stamps and coins
cameras

you can cover your photographic equipment as part of our household contents insurance. you will need to declare each item with serial numbers & value and the insurer will probably charge 1% of the insured value on top of your existing insurance. hope this helps.
