Need some help from bros out there. Total idiot on imac.

Recently my Imac would like to hangs just running on simple applications. My specs are :
1.83ghz
2 gigs
Previously have edited 2 videos no problem but now halfway thru it just hangs for no apparent reasons. Any bros know what the cause?

Many possibilities but off-hand I can think of this:

Corrupt media - does it hang at the same spot in the video?
If so delete that particular media and recapture

What software r you using. I have the same setup and I used Premeire and iMovie+ iDVD. No problems after many many hours of editing and post-production.

Not really even now playing I tunes also hang on me.

Bad RAM? Is yours 2 1 Gb pieces of RAM or a single 2 Gb? Try running an Apple Hardware test that's in the restore DVD that came with the box.

Working with 2 1 gig ram have try running utility so far have pass Volume verification.
Maybe last resort i will give a try on the point you highlighted. Thank Bro for your input very much appreciated.

This usually is a sign of weakening hard disk - check the hard disk and use disk utility to verify & fix - may be its going...

Yes have already clear the hard disk currently volume on the HD is 107Gb. Verify & fix up several times. Will use the last resort as what Bro eel mentioned.

I'm using Premeire CS3. Very stable.
It's a Core 2 Duo 1.83ghz + 2 x 1Gb Ram + 160 Gb.
No hanging :D

wonder if the imac graphic card ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory good engh for cs3?
the retail guy selling cs3 told me 256MB maybe abit slow, idealy a 512MB graphic card.. and he said PC is a better choice.. not sure how true lay.. :)

What are you comparing? Rendering? Viewing?
You will be surprised to hear this. I have a new Macbook - 2.1Ghz, 2Gb ram, GMA X3100 160Gb harddisk but my laptop renders faster than my iMac using CS3. No other softwares running.

So I ask myself does the Gfx matters? If for games and viewing, it sure matters, but in terms of output for DVD, I really+seriously can't see gfx affects much.

I believe you are having an operating system corruption. Reinstall your OS and fully clean up your HDD will be good as new. And pls upgrade RAM to at least 4GB. I used to use a 2GB RAM imac and find it slowly as you do video editing as time goes by.

By the way:
Adobe video editing software are hungry for ram.

And also having a high end graphic card is only good when you use apple aperture or playing games or watching full HD Videos. It is not a necessary improvement to video editing. As video editing tends to be more hungry on RAMs. That applies to Windows.

So do not believe people telling you PC better than MAC or vice versa. It is how you configured your computer to get the best out of it.

Imac is not a bad computer, it can sometimes do things better than a customized PC.

True, true.

If you can afford it, get the macbook pro, like me. :p

Hi there Bro Special. Another likely cause of your troubles would be that you might be using too much of your internal hard drive and that you are running FCE and all of your media/documents stored in the same Hard Drive. When using FCE/FCP/FCS2 it is best to leave the application in your main hard drive but run it instead in an external HDD. Any Mac computers will start to give you trouble when you reach 3/4 capacity of your main hard drive so free it up. Firewire cables and connections can also contribute to the 'hanging' and 'crashes' in iMacs especially if you have your camera or deck connected via Firewire and an external HDD because imacs uses only 1 bus for all the firewire ports. Connect the external Harddrive via usb instead. (the difference in transfer rate is not that significant) Hope this will help.

As for the Ram... 4 Gb would be nice... but 2 gb will suffice if you are using Standard DV.

Cheerios!

FCP will hang when the reference file is larger than the RAM assigned to FCP. This usually occurs when you have very big high res photos in your timeline.
