Ikelite iTTL overexposes?

Hi folks,

Was trying out an Ikelite housing with iTTL using two DS-125s over the weekend, doing some macro test shots in a swimming pool. Is it just me, or does the iTTL system tend to overexpose? Happened with both Program and Manual settings.

I have been using the Ike manual controllers previously.

Appreciate the feedback, thanks.

i tried using the ikelite's olympus TTL on my E500 with one DS50.

exposure seems ok when i used manual 1/160 F22, iso 100 . but sometimes underexposed.
slower shutter speeds and wider apertures, usually ok. occasionally also get overexposed.

-Check if your DS125 support i-TTL, the earlier versions do not.

-Also, I assume your base camera setting is not already just right for the subjects under ambient light. i.e. any further light fill, even low intensity, from the strobes will cause over exposure.

Yes, both my strobes are iTTL-ready.

Metering showed that manual settings were under for ambient light - shutter speed at 1/125 and even with fstop up to 22, ISO 100.

Anyway, I figure that it may be sunlight reflecting off the pool tiles and screwing up the readings. Will try in the "real world" and see how it goes.

Thanks, everyone, for your feedback.

How abt checking the switch under the black plate where you screw the camera to the Ikelite housing? Did you select DS125 instead of DS50?

I shoot with exposure compensation 2 steps down, I use 2xDS125 too.

RSU, subject matter plays a part too....white tends to overexpose.

Wouldn't I be selecting "DS125" instead of "DS50" if I'm using DS125s? I sincerely hope your comment is a typo. ;)

Noted, thx. The test pictures I took were the corner of a Rubik's cube (remember those???) using a 105 micro, mainly green, yellow and red squares. The full frame of the photo was all Rubik's cube, no backgound.

Anyway, will try out in Manado at the end of the month. If anyone is interested in going (27th May to 3rd June) drop me a PM for details.

Thanks for sharing.

are your strobes in the same plane as your lens, or are they in front?

In front, one above (master) and one to the left of the subject (slave). It's not backscatter, if that's what you're thinking, and definitely pointed away from the lens. No diffuser on either strobe.

no, i was thinking ttl is taken from the lens, so if the strobes were in front , there will be overexposure.

Ah, ok. Anyway, no worries. Took the camera out for another swimming pool session over the weekend. Results were definitely more consistent. The difference? Overcast versus bright sunshine previously. :bsmilie:

Once again, thanks everyone for your feedback/suggestions. Can't wait for my trip at the end of the month. Sitting at my desk making Darth Vader/regulator sounds already....;)
