I decided to buy a second hand enlarger from ebay. I decided to begin with 35mm type first. However, there is a lot of Enlarger maker, I wonder which one should I choose?

Plus, I heard that the Leitz old one sounds not bad, should I try it?

Get a 6x6 or 6x7 enlarger - you can always use a 50mm lens on it for 135 format and should you need or want to print MF negatives, you can always invest in a 75 or 80mm lens later. Enlargers are pretty cheap these days. Most brands are acceptable.

There are different types of enlargers. The following is a good source of information on the different types.

Try to get an enlarger whose manufacturer is still in business so that you can get spare parts easily.

Enlarger are so cheap now a day. Get a Durst, Omega or lecia are fine. Try to get one that print medium format as suggested by Tetrode, as when you grow into medium format the enlarge are ready for you.

I'm confused...by my Hong Kong friend's question:
"is it necessary to make a dark room in nowadays? you can ask some private shop to help you!"

Half the art (and fun) of photography is done in the dark room. You have total artistic control over your pics when you print your own.

Plus you will improve your photo taking skills by knowing what goes into making or breaking a photo in the lab.

But I guess in land scarce HK, where space comes at a premium, I can see why your friend might have said what he said.

Hmm, im also thinking of developing my own shots since im planning to venture into black and white photography. i think the developing and printing part would be fun. My question is would it be expensive? how much would it cost me to set up my own darkroom? As for the enlargers, how much would one cost? i notice you guys talking about enlargers being cheap these days. What about buying a used one?
