How to downscale 4K to 1080p?

Hi all, need some pointers please.

I searched online and found some tutorials. Basically the two options that was stated is either (1) edit in 4K and output to 1080, or (2) import sequence to already 1080. I also watched Dave Dugdale youtube tutorial but i can't seem to even adjust the size (to resize) from 4K to 1080 (the feature seems to be locked).

I understand that only some codecs support 4K output.

Can someone please enlighten me?

I am using Adobe Premier CS6 and just got a Panasonic LX-100.

Many thanks in advance.

Not sure if I understand I your question correctly.

But why don't create a timeline video of 1080p in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X and then put the 4K videos into this timeline ? Then when you render, it will be in 1080p ...

Thanks Ryan. Yes, its hard to explain what i need to.

I tried to do what you mentioned. But there is an error message and it does not output. I am used to outputting my files to photojpeg (quicktime). Not sure what is the next best format. I was wondering how to do the output portion. What codec to use to give maximum resolution?

You shouldn't get an error leh ... I have done so many times placing a 4K clip on a 1080p timeline without error.

Btw, what does the error message says ?

Could it be that your 4K itself is corrupted ? Try to test by output a small section first ....

I have output mov and/or mp4. So far no problem. They all give me good resolution.

You can try outputting just a 5 secs clip and see if it works ? If it doesn't work, try another section of 5 secs ...

Usually I use ProRes 422 (HQ) or H2.64 and all works ...

So everything works fine up till the point you export? What's the error message? You can also try posting on the adobe forums, lots of experts there.

Not familiar with photojpeg (quicktime), a google search shows that it's a commonly used codec/container for submission of stock videos. Is that what you're using it for?

A shot in the dark... but is this the error you get? Here's one possibility:

The "error compiling movie, unknown error" problem that you are getting when export as Quicktime means that you don't have enough available hard drive space to export the gigantic file you're trying to export. You've got three choices here:

1. Choose a hard drive that has enough available disk space, or clean up enough space on the existing drive.
2. Use a compressor to make the QT file smaller.
3. Export out a smaller section of the file.

You get this same error message when trying to create an FLV file in PPro when you've got limited disk space. The problem there is that PPro first makes and uncompressed QT file then uses QT to convert the file to FLV.

Free up some disk space and try it again.

maybe can try codec avid dnxhd (i think it can only output 1080p on cs6)

Hi Ryan, Kandisky and Pettypoh,

Thanks for coming to my help!

Sorry for the late reply.

I managed to return to office today to give it a try. I shortened the file to export using photojpeg and 1920 x 1080and it worked seamlessly. But this time i saved it direct to the hard disk rather than using an external disk.

The error message did not appear this time (previously, it just said 'error' with no additional info).

Thanks for the help once again!
