i quote the terms of use:
3. Off-Topic (OT) posts - Please direct all posts not related to Photography to the Kopitiam forum. OT posts will be deleted or moved without noticed if posted in any other forums.
* NOTE: Although Kopitiam is meant as a catch-all area for things not related to photography, posts/threads which are:
1. religious,
2. political,
3. racist;
in nature or can be construed as such will also be stamped out, abolished and demolished without prejudice.
as much as i love to have a political discussion, i think the nature of the discussion here are rather immature, and border on mudslinging dissenting opinions or venting personal frustrations on other people. i think there was a reason why this particular line of these terms was drawn up, but in recent months EVERY SINGLE THREAD ON SINGAPORE NEWS has somehow turned into political discussion eventually. and it is ALWAYS, ALWAYS, the same few people who start it. and ALWAYS in the same way. just one liners, that just goad people (including me, i admit) to either add in their 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, or rebutt.
and then what will happen is that there will be name-calling, flame-baiting, it is a very ugly scene that serves no purpose, since nothing is done in the end.
i do wish the moderators and admin take a harder stand on this; i think no one can equate what is happening here to mature, responsible discussion no matter what angle is taken. there is a huge difference between responsible free speech, as opposed to what happens here 75% of the time. surely, we can all live out the lives of a community without all these unhappiness; if there is no proper behaviour then i think perhaps the community needs to be protected from itself - the same way the kids in primary school need a close eye to watch on them in during physical education class to make sure they don't kill themselves.
that said, i also understand that sometimes restriction will cause another sort of consequence, but i think if one is firm, but not high-handed, with reasonable explanation given.. like has been done in the past on many occasions, then such will not happen. i know that effort is being taken to try to control such posts while allowing for reasonable freedom of speech; but i think while such issues can be approached with such maturity, the members who cannot seem to do so should be handled with a harder hand. i know that the preferred approach here is to always talk to them first, and i am in many ways glad for that, but if they cannot seem to get the message that their actions will have serious negative consequences on the cohesiveness of the community - surely there is more to life than just logging on to post in kopitiam threads to twist the discussion in the way of politics?, first and foremost; along with the fact that they are personally responsible for their own actions, even if they think they are not due to the perceived "anonymity" of the internet.
hope you get my drift, thanks.
