Hello everyone, another noob here!

So glad I found CS cause it has so much information here! Haven't really had the time to learn more due to my upcoming exams. Can't wait for them to be over.

Anyway, been a point and shoot user and would like to move to a dSLR. Quite interested in the upcoming D5000 and 500D. Will they be suitable for noobs?

Yes, why not. They are entry level DSLR. But note the differences in prices of lens between the two.

Hello...welcome.

As mentioned many times, all entry level cams will give you decent pictures when used within their limitations. Do some research to see if you can work around the limitations before buying and go to the shops to test the cams to see if it its nicely in your hands.

Any camera can be suitable for a newbie - provided the newbie is willing to learn the basics about photography and handling the camera. If you just want to Point and Shoot .. well there are already many solutions then.
If you are unsure about the whole topic you can also get a second hand camera to lower your expenses. Many offerings in the Classified section.

50D and D5000 are of different leagues.
50D is a already considered a pro camera (high-end)
where as a D5000 is smack in the middle of the entry-level to midrange cameras.
Price difference is also nearly a 4 figure sum.

Oh I meant the upcoming Canon 500D. 50D is definitely out of my budget. Haha

Hmm. Yes,
the 500D is the equivalent of D90.
Whereas as i have mentioned the D5000 is in the middle of entry-level cameras and mid-range.
It's a new league or category.
However new the D5000 is, it lacks the ability to focus with any older AF lenses such as AF-D lens.

yes, why not..

there are also options like k200d, olympus e series, or sony models, these are all decent cameras..
