im a newbie and im having a hard time deciding whether to upgrade my lens from the basic D60 18mm-55mm lens to 18-200mm lens or buy a external flash ? any advice from seniors? :dunno:

For me I got the flash before I got my 18-250mm. But that is because I shoot quite abit indoors.

Do you find yourself using the pop-up flash frequently? If so, you may want to get a speedlite first you will be amazed with the results you can get with your kit lens when you can bounce light around.

Usage of Nikon's 18-200 lens requires external flash as pop-up flash usage will result in semi-circular shadow shape at bottom of pictures taken. External flash has the height to throw the light without leaving the shadow.

If you wish to get 18-200 lens, purchase of external flash is essential for above reason.

You have a point here The shadow thing happens with my lens as well.

ianeo, you may want to still get the flash first, unless you want to switch back to the kitty everytime you use your pop-up flash.
