Wondering if there is any video editing suite that does portrait format video editing instead of the usual landscape format? The usual adobe after effects, flash etc... a little overkill to do something simple... Any ideas?

Vegas does portrait format, intended for digital signboards.

Bro Waycool,

yes, it can be done, but there are certain limitations.
Using Final Cut Pro or Express, you can change the output resolution to a portrait size....
ie. instead of 720x576 for standard definition TV, you can change the output aspect to 576x720 and make it portrait.

However, you'll be limited to using file-based output because once you go thru a video-based output, the usual hardware like DVD players or TV input will only accept the standard TV aspect ratio.

Drop me a call if you need further clarification.

i'm guessing this is for an event or store display

My suggested workflow to create a DVD in portrait wld be

Edit in FCP in portrait using custom "Sequence" size ie 576 x 720
Once ready for export, drag your portrait sequence into a normal 720X576 and rotate your protrait sequence 90deg to fit into the frame.
Export to DVD using DVD studio pro

Rotate your LCD or plasma :)

of course outputing to H264 1080x1920 would be much better quality

Question though, is this meant for a portrait oriented/'orientable' display ?
If so, then I don't see why you need to orient the video though.
Just rotate the screen instead?

Or am I not making sense ? :embrass:

there'll be a lot of workaround variations & solutions depending on Waycool's requirements.
If you've visited the Army museum, I've consulted for the video company on a couple of displays and output requirements.

Filming in portrait mode by rotating the camera can be one of the many solutions to display in portrait while still maintaining resolution, else if the source is still pictures, just edit the whole video sequence in landscape with the still pictures orientated 90deg and during the final output, just rotate the screen.

oh which videos for Army Museum did u consult on ?

I don't know if these are the correct names, I recall the overturned bus, bunk, hijacked plane, and a few other installations that i can't remember the names.

Showing full-screen video rotated to portrait layout is one possibility. But sometimes you need to show a normal orientation video on part of a portrait display, and have graphics, text or even other video on other parts. This is a typical usage of an electronic signboard. (There is one in the ground floor lift lobby in Funan that is a good example).

If your NLE allows you to rotate the preview display, you can see what the final output will look like much more easily. The final rendered video in this case will be normal video specification, it is just that the display needs to be turned 90° for the picture to look correct.

Thanks for the many helpful replies. Yes it is for a rotated tv display sign. And I was also wondering this because it is easy to shoot video in portrait format on dslr. And I wanted a better way to output to mobile phones too... Seems like FCE is a possible contender over my current iMovie.
