Nice!
Is it absolutely essential to leave the aperture open wide? would it be possible to get a little more DOF using a smaller aperture or will it just not work then? I have been thinking of getting a close focusing filter for my 18-200mm and maybe using that instead...just not really sure how useful that will be. Thanks for the help! :)

No you can play around with different aperture settings. Try playing around a bit and you should be able to get the hang of it after a while. Try shooting stationary subjects to get familiar with the focusing technique before you start chasing bugs.

I have used the canon 500D close up lens with the nikon 70-300VR before. The results are quite ok but I am not sure how it will work with the 18-200VR. Others who have tried might be able to give you some feed back.

Here is what I got with the canon 500D on the 70-300 VR , DOF is thin as you can see from this shot.

Damn! That's a nice pic! Well it looks then that I will have a go investing in both since neither is overly expensive. In any case, the close focusing filter will be useful if I suddenly need a a macro lens and have nothing by the zoom with me. :) Thanks for all the help!
