I'd recommend getting a Canon HV30 video camera. I use one as a capture deck for my XH-A1 tapes, and also as a backup and travel cam. And it's under $1,700.

Agree with jaegersing, I always use a low-end camera to capture and even dump out. Unless you are viewing shuttling back and forth, deck is not the most economical option.

I think if you have requirements for long term or bulk use, it would be wiser to invest in a proper professional series deck. Consumer grade VTRs or using camcorders as playback machines just doesn't last.
I've had more than 5 consumer camcorders breaking down after hours of playback for capturing. Even when comparing professional series of equipment to similar consumer grade versions like the DV Walkman series or even the Z1 vs. FX1 cameras, given the same amount of hours used, my consumer grade model failed way earlier than my professional grade equipment....
A check with my friend who used to be in Sony engineering dept told me that this is due to better designs and more robust drive mechanism being put into professional grade machines. An example of such differences that i've witnessed is that some consumer grade equipment was designed with plastic gears and pro-grade equipment are fitted with more robust metal gears.
You may consider the HVR-M15 if you need PAL/NTSC or rather 50i/60i compatibility. :thumbsup:

Most of the wear and tear is caused by shuttling, as jhansolo mentioned. But nowadays there is no need to do that. You can just capture the whole tape to disk in one pass, select your "wanted" shots from the capture files, then delete the rest. The wear on the cam should be minimal.
Of course, if you are capturing many hours of tape every day then a real deck will last longer.
