Was considering either HDV or AVCHD so would like to hear your views.

HDV - Still better uncompressed quality

AVCHD - Compressed quality, limited editing software, newest format

Can anybody list the current compatible editing software?

That's why I have shortlisted the 3 videocam,
Canon HV30 -very good quality, manual control, heavier cos using mini DV tapes
HF10 - newest format, very light.
Sony HDR CX12E - newest format, very light, comparable to HF10.

Appreciate your comments,pls.
Thanks!

A lot depends on what you want to use it for.

Anyway HDV is also very heavily compressed, just not quite so much as AVCHD.

And be aware that Canon is releasing the HG20/21 HDD models very soon, with AVCHD recording at 24Mbps. This should close the quality gap with HDV.

Sorry I didn't really answer your question, but I think it is not so simple.

I have the HV30. It's great. Only prob w tapes is that they have to be carefully stored and you can't have direct access to different clips (unlike disc/memory card).

Suggest you take a look at the HF11's review on camcorderinfo.com.
