HD-DVD can only be played on a bluray player. You can author/burn full HD content onto a standard DVD using a standard DVD burner on your computer, and still playback full HD video on your LCD tv, through a bluray player. That's HD-DVD discs. DVD players do not playback anything more than VCDs and DVDs.
Video is grainy, because consumer video cameras have consumer-sized sensors and they do not yield the kind of crisp video you see from Harvey Norman or Courts TV section.
