Good travel lense <$1200 for EOS 550D

You have the Tamron lens? Maybe it would be benefit most with a short test at yourside to verify the result from the two review site. :)

Nope I don't own one since the last zoom lens that I had was Tamron 18-200mm.

If I were to compare only the 18-200 VC/IS/OS offering from all manufacturers, I would go for the Canon's

Jeff, I guess we are in the same shoe. I am looking forward to my travel plan next year and I have yet to decide which lens should I get.

If just based on the 3 lens u post, I will put it in this way.

24-105 F4, Good if you think up to 105 is good enough

15-85 If you are not intending to upgrade, then this is good to have or 17-55IS

Sigma 24-70 if you have intention for FF upgrade and might get a 70-200 in the future.

Basically all 3 lens are fine. just that what you want.

For me. currently I have these combination.

7D with 12-24, 24-70, 50 and 180macro. I prefer to get a FF lens for more future proof.

70-200 is in my wishing list.

I ever did a search on a versatile travel lens...

between Canon 18-200 IS and Tamron 18-270 VC, FYI, user recommendation + review + range, Tamron 18-270mm is the winner.

But I didnt get any as I prefer more performance.

Personally, instead of the 15-85 I will choose the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 plus an EF 85f1.8 for the same price.

Hi everyone, thanks again for your invaluable input. Based on what most of you have recommended, I think I've managed to narrow down my choices to the 18-200mm or the 15-85mm. Though I'm more inclined to 15-85mm due to the reviews regarding the good IQ, and USM, cause that is what I really want in my future travel lense.

It is true the 24-105 L does seem a little lacking for the wide angle portion, and will require a UWA lense to cover it. I think the main reason I am attracted to it is because of the L quality and resale value, and it may not be that practical for APS-C cameras, probably it'll be very front heavy or a body like 550D.

Was just wondering, I am seeing very few people reselling the 15-85mm on clubsnap, is it because it is a keeper lense, or is it because not many people got it yet? Some are quite happy with it (like limleong), but other than that I don't really hear much about it as compared to the other general purpose lense.

As for future consideration, I personally would buy a 70-200mm f4 IS lense to pair up with the 15-85mm. Do you guys think it'll be a good combo?
