Good Morning, Vietnam...

Xin Chao Hà Nội!

I had the chance to steal some time to shoot Hanoi during my business trip to the Vietnamese capital city last week. It was a very hot and sunny Hanoi. The pre-loaded Tri-X 400 was an overkill for a Sunny 16++ I switched to Fuji Reala 100 and then back to Tri-X 400 for this short trip.

It was fortunate that Srono was also back in Hanoi for a home visit. We went around town in his scooter for a Cha Ca dinner on Friday night and a very early morning shoot/pho bo/coffee on Sat early morning (5:30am). His friend Steven also joined us for the morning shoot. Riding pillion on the streets of Hanoi is an unforgettable experience.

@Srono: Thanks for the ride and company!!

My gear for this shoot is my M4, 28mm Elmarit and Jupiter-3. I decided to travel light :)

I will be posting some shots from:
- My hotel area around West Lake
- Hoan Kiem Lake area
- Old Quarters area

Cam on…

-----------------------------------
Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội), estimated population nearly 6.5 million (2009), is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyễn Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.

The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 1,760 km (1,090 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City.

October 2010 will officially mark 1000 years of the establishment of the city. On this occasion, Hanoi has been named by Frommer's travel guide as one of the world's "Top Destinations 2010"....source: wikipedia

This shot was taken at my hotel with condensation on my Elmarit 28mm. It was the hot Vietnamese sun (it was Sunny 16++) meeting the hotel-chilled lens....

SUBLIME STYLE ON THE BANKS OF Hồ TÂY LAKE InterContinental Hanoi Westlake is Hanoi’s newest first-class hotel. It is located about 15 minutes from the central business district and numerous shopping areas. Built entirely over the serene waters of historic West Lake and adjacent to the famous 800-year-old Golden Lotus Pagoda, the hotel features 359 guestrooms showcasing contemporary Vietnamese design at its best. InterContinental Hanoi Westlake is just 30 minutes by car from Noi Bai International Airport.

West Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Tây) is a freshwater lake in the center of Hanoi, Vietnam. With a shore length of 17 km (about 10.6 miles), this is the largest lake of the capital and a popular place for recreation with many surrounding gardens, hotels and villas. A small part of West Lake is divided by Thanh Nien road to form Truc Bach Lake. One district of Hanoi is named after the lake, Tay Ho district....source: wikipedia

I like staying at the Inter-Con for the peace and quiet environment although it is "relatively" far from the business district. Taxi ride to Hoan Kiem Lake area is about 70,000 Dong (~SGD5). Fishing and exercising around the West Lake is a common sight.

Good tonality and mood!

Life@West Lake

History:
West Lake was created from a curved part of Red River and appeared in several Vietnamese legends. One legend suggests that West Lake was shaped after the battle between Lac Long Quan and a night-tail fox spirit, that's why the lake was once called "Fox Corpse Swamp" (Vietnamese: Đầm Xác Cáo). Another folk story claimed that original name of the lake is "Golden Buffalo Lake" (Vietnamese: Hồ Trâu Vàng, or Han Viet: Hồ Kim Ngưu) because it was formed from struggle of a buffalo after the disappearance of her calf. In 11th century, the lake was named "Foggy Lake" (Han Viet: Hồ Dâm Đàm) from its misty condition and ultimately its name was changed to "West Lake" in 1573 to avoid the given name of king Lê Thế Tông which was Duy Đàm.

West Lake is bordered with many significant places in history of Hanoi and Vietnam. Tran Quoc Pagoda, oldest pagoda in Vietnam, was built in 6th century by Lý Nam Đế and now locates on a small island in the middle of the lake. Near Tran Quoc Pagoda is Quan Thanh Temple, one of the Four Sacred Temples of ancient Hanoi (Vietnamese: Tứ trấn Thăng Long). Chu Van An High School, one of the oldest high school in Vietnam, also locates close to the lake.

Recreation activities:
As the largest lake and locates right in the center of Hanoi, West Lake is rammed with many gardens, hotels, restaurants and other entertaining centers. For this reason, real estate price of areas near West Lake is staggering and the surrounding quarters are often full with high-class villas of every architectures.

Coal maker @ Old Quarter...

Old Quarter:
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food....source: wikipedia

These are shots from our Saturday early morning shoot. Srono picked me up from my hotel and we zipped to Old Quarter on his scooter. The traffic at 6am was much better than last night!! Although it was early, the Vietnamese were out in force doing their things...and mostly still in their night clothes!

Vincent, nice shots at Hanoi...and great write-up too...really great effort...thanks for sharing...:cheergal::cheergal::cheergal:

Wonderful images!
Inter Con West Lake, formerly known as Lien Westlake Hotel...my senior partner designed this many years ago, before the economic downturn in 90's. Glad that Inter Con has turned it into a worthwhile destination.
Thanks for the images.
