The usual shops like the following

CP - Cathay Photo, Peninsula (Main) Tel: 6337-4274
MS - MS Color, Tel: 6457-6380
TK - T.K. Foto Technic, Shaw Tower Tel: 6269-4533
LC - Lord Camera, Lucky Plaza Tel: 6235-4605
AP - Alan Photo, SimLim Tel: 6336-0922

Give them a ring and ask for a quotation. Ensure that you ask them whether the price quoted includes GST as well as the freebies attached.

Accessories may not be crucial at this point in time. Play around with the camera first.

Just get a UV filter for your kit lens. If budget allows, get a good UV filter such as B+W or Hoya Super HMC.

What is your area of interest in photography? Macro, street, portrait, etc.

There are too many zoom lenses around to choose, so you need to know what do you want to shoot first in order to determine what zoom lens to buy.

I am interested in portrait, scenery, and object photographing. I feel that Kit lens is not good enough to play around.

so you want a zoom lens or a tele zoom lens? the 400d kit lens 18-55 is also considered a zoom lens... if you find quality not good enough, do look at tamron 17-50 f2.8.
as for tele, maybe the sigma 70-300

I term your scenary as landscapes.... the kit lens should be wide enough to cover that...
Portrait / Object photography.... that's a little tricky for $500 zooms. Would 3rd party be part of your considerations?

Why not use a prime? The 50mm (although I find it plasticky) f/1.8 delivers good pictures for it's price. That's what a lot of people use anyway.
For 1:1 object macro, the EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro is also another easy to handle prime.

get it from oracle.. he's selling 1480nett..

correction. the ef 50mm f/2.5 does only 1:2 macro.

you might want to look into the following lenses:

sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 dc
tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 di-ii
tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 di

You FEEL that the kit lens is not enuff for you to play with?

So, where did u gather that the kit lens doesn't fit up to your standard? Hearsay? 'Look very lousy, not pro-looking'? Purely review sites? Or do u actually have a camera before that which u had extensively tested thoroughly under your working condition and found that the kit lens does not perform?

Don't blame the equipment when ur personal skills can't live up to the equipment's standard yourself. Live with it and when u'd found what you really like to shoot and move on from there.

Blaming equipment or 'lousy kit lens' rather than yourself for ubber crap shots seems to be the 'in' thing amongst newbies these days. I wonder why.

Geez... All the while I thought it's 1:1.... :sweatsm:

I'm quite happy with the kit lens. I think that if you're a newbie like myself, the kit lens is a great starter lens. Once you pick up skills along the way, then you can consider improving your arsenal :)

the kit lens can do wonders when there is sufficient light.

I would suggest that you keep and use the kit lens for a while. It is pretty a good range, and if you know how to use it correctly, it can also give you decent results. Post processing can also help you to do some correction if you find the result from the kit lens is not ideal.

Given your budget of $500, I would recommend you the Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro. Basically, you will need a tele zoom lens to complement your kit lens.

Why not wait for Pentax K10D?

USM, how much is the UV filter you mention here?

hmm.. wif in mind wat u shoot (portraits, sceneries/ landscapes, objects), guess it wld be wise to kip ur kit lens first. play arnd wif it and figure wat range u shoot most often, wat kind of lightins u shoot in and such.. dun tink u mite nid a tele-zoom for such shots. if say, u shoot in low light, get a 430EX flash and use it together wif ur kit lens (performs much better when stopped down) and if u can break ur budget alittle, get a EF 50mm f1.8.. it does nt haf USM but heck, for dat price, it's as gd as any lens u can ask for. :bsmilie:

The kit lens is good enough for what you intend to shoot. Unless of course you can afford it, go for the lens suggested by spartacus
