Photoshop users who have toyed with GIMP before and found it very user-unfriendly... download the latest version (2.4.4) and try it out!

It's been extensively reworked, and much more familiar to use, especially for Photoshop users. Layers, Channels, Paths, selection tools - they're all there. Also got healing brush!

The Help manual is also very good.

thanks for the heads up! does it support tablet pen pressure sensitivity?

Wow. Played with it yesterday. Really nice.

A few features I like:

1. Dynamic keyboard shortcuts - you can assign any keyboard shortcut to a menu item. Just navigate to the menu item, hover the mouse there and press the key or key combination. Sweet and simple and very useful.

2. iWarp filter - this is apparently the GIMP version of Photoshop's Liquefy, which I have never tried (my photoshop is version 4.0!). Truly fantastic, and useful for slimming down fat faces and bodies.

3. Healing tool - much better than simple cloning. Yes, I do come from the middle ages.

cool! so it works! going to try it out after cny. I hope it loads faster than PS.

hmm i think you shouldn't hope it loads faster than PS cos it most prob won't cos gimp isn't built to run native on winxp

on a side note, you can speed up PS loading by removing some plugins and filters I think

other goodies is to chk out the refocus plugin(gimp)

and web buttons scripts that comes standard.
IMHO gimp rox for web buttons from pics compared to PS or imageready..
plus u can't compete for the price.

also can chk out my poll on PS vs GIMP here

feel free to add more useful info to the thread.

Thing is, with Gimp 2.4, you don't really need Gimpshop any more.

Anyway, Gimpshop has not been updated for a long time.

Slaam, d'you know script-fu? Can I turn to you for help?

hey sorry not well versed in script-fu.
but wat are you trying to do with it leh?

Basically I want to do batch processing (eg smart-sharpen) of several files, using scripts written by other people.

Do you know of any other way than using script-fu and the batch processor?

David's Batch Processor (DBP) uses unsharp masking, so that's out.

you can reuse the instructions for batch run to use the plugin i guess.

maybe you can post your experiences there.

anyone tried tablet input with GIMP? I tried and I'm having all sorts of funny responses.. when i use my tablet, GIMP becomes sluggish and the cursor skips and sometimes refuse to move unless I take the pen off and put it down again.. At the same time when I move my mouse, it is very smooth.

I've configured the extended device options and pen presure sensitivity can be detected .

Have you set the the tablet preference to screen or window mode?
