I haven't used this lens, but the reviews don't speak very highly of this.

Don't know what is your budget. Maybe you can consider a 2nd hand lens and choose between either of these two listed below. The first one is an EF-S lens, so will only work on 1.6x cropfactor cameras.

1. Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

2. Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

PS : I don't have either of these lenses, but two of my good friends have it and I've used them on my 30D. My impression of both was good - but then I am just a newbie...

Maybe for about a $100++ more you can try the EF 24-85 f3.5-4.5 USM. I tried it before and is better than the EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM :)

24-85 is a much more useful range than the 28-105 assuming you are using a 1.6 FOV crop DSLR (I assume 10/20/300/350/400D).

Actually if you are using 400D, 20D or 30D, you would have spent over 1K for your body, new or 2nd hand and you should therefore spend more on the lens. To me the lens is more important than the body (generally - of course if you are an action/sports photographer, then different story).

i'd go for either

1) Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4. sharp, versatile range, decent macro. Check out fengwei's pics from this lens in the Pentax subforum where he shows photos from his trip to the Philippines. About $600 local set with local warranty from Mscolor

2) Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. tack sharp. light, small, cheaper 67mm filters. about $620 from Orient Photo 6th flr SLS grey set with 1yr shop warranty

both these two lenses are great pieces of glass. wont go wrong with any of them.

The 28-105mm is a good lens. I tried it a couple of years back and I had fun with it. Images produced from it are good quality.

But problem is with digital cams like your 400D, you might find the 28mm not wide enough. Maybe you might want to consider the 18-55 kit lens. It's cheap and good if you are on a budget. If you have more cash to spare, can consider the 17-85IS lens.

If really want to go for budget lens.. 2nd hand 17-85 IS is the option ;) ($600-650)
Want to recommend L but later Lxxxxxxxxg say I am the BBB virus  anyway you already mentioned low budget :bsmilie:

Just to add tamron 17-50 f2.8 is a really fast and sharp lens with big aperture if you don't mind the "remote control" like noise while focusing :bsmilie: $600 too

I have a Canon 350D and my first lens was the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Love it and recommend it. If you have the kit lens (18-55) keep it for the wider shots until you need a wider / better lens. I find it is 'ok' from 18-30 ish.

i support your 1st option, but look for 1 with warranty left in case lens has problem..

Perhaps, bro, you want to tell us more about what you shoot and your budget.

It's like asking what should I eat and not telling us whether you have food allergies or a budget of sorts.

Hi all,
Thanks for all the replies. What my plans are to shoot from a distance, but not a tele lens yet:) , so i thought this len sound good and it has quite a low f3.5 to f4.
just for info that i still a newbie.... but i have a passion in it.

You have a kit lens already?

Yup i have a kit lens. I will keep it for wide angle.

Then in that case, don't go for a 28-105. Save up a little bit more, beat with the kit lens first, then go for the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8. Great, sharp lens that allows you to shoot from a distance. It makes a great street photography lens.
