Fuss over a plane taking off from and landing on aircraft carrier

Well... from lots of reports in the net, the Chinese pilots do practiced alot on mock up carrier on land. Of course that is different from the real thing, but it is good practice.

Ski Jump is a very useful system, it enable the plane to accelerate and gain enough speed for take off. If not, they will need longer airstrip. Of course the steam catapult system is more useful in many ways, being able to project the aircraft with external force to enable the plane to reach the speed needed for it to fly... yet underlining network of pipes and stuff like that make the entire aircraft carrier pretty large and power consumption is incredible unless China or any nation master the nuclear power system needed on the ship, it is very very difficult to achieve that goal.

Of course there are other innovation on the way (such as EMAL system that will definitely reduce or remove the number of pipes underlining the carrier top deck) but these innovations are too new and early in their stage so I am not expecting to see them in use for at least another decade.

All in all, it is a good effort by the Chinese and do note that the first aircraft carrier in the Chinese arsenal was only for testing and training purposes, so that in 2014 (as many reports had stated) they would have a crew ready to operate in 2 indigenously developed and launched aircraft carriers. But I do believe that these new aircraft carriers would be ski jump too and not yet catapult launch because if they are going to be catapult launch aircraft carrier, then by now we should be seeing mockup on land.

wrong. they have been practising the catapult launch

It costs a fortune to build, operate and maintain aircraft carriers.

Reminds me of an article recently. A UK pilot helped the Japs developed the aircraft carriers & taught pilots to land using classified materials he obtained from the British. It was linked to Churchill as well.

Anyway, the AC is a showoff of military might & costs huge money to maintain. Thailand has one but....

Aircraft carrier is a mobile airbase that is meant for power projection.
With a fleet of J-15 multi-role fighters on the Chinese Laoning carrier, it probably has more airpower than most of asian countries.

Hope one day it might port call at Singapore so that our fellow CS members could have a chance take some nice pictures!

My dad said the People's Liberation Army could overrun the whole of Singapore just armed with forks and spoons. Sg soldiers will run out of bullets (or get spooned to death while reloading) , or be overwhelmed by the waves and waves of PLA soldiers waving forks and spoons.

He is weird.

They have nuclear weapons, don't need to use fork and spoon :bsmilie:

PLA troops use chopsticks.
There are only few places in the world with many Chinese. PRC (now includes Macau+HK SAR), Taiwan, Singapore.
To some extent, West Malaysia. Why would they want to fight us.

He is not weird.... imagine... if whole of China population spit in our direction.... we will all drown!!! :bsmilie:

US has 11 operational carriers and most have N capability

Once the Chinese gets the hang of it, numbers is a non-issue... they will out-produce anyone - and at a cheaper cost.

China can win by volume.... even if it is older technology..... it is hard to fight them......

zergrush = china strategy.

hopefully they won't end up with pirated parts. landing - oops , tailhook made of material Y instead of material X (stronger and suitable).
or pilot's seatbelt made of substandard nylon, everytime landing , the pilots bonk their helmets into the canopy. wahahaha. that is funny. sorry i have a weird sense of humor

actually pirated parts are already circulating among airlines.
saw this on an episode of "air crash disasters" on natgeo, plane fell out of sky cos using counterfeit screws.
even air force 1 was found to have some pirated parts.
