I dun think miniDV tape cost should be a factor to change to HDD.

How much does 3-5 tapes cost per wedding ? $30 ?
What is the % of this $30 to what you charge ? I think very very small right ?

Its not the cost of the tape, but rather the time in your NLE.
If your wedding uses 5 tapes, you will need roughly 5 hours just to dump the DV into the PC, should your 5 tapes worth of info can be dump into a HDD by recording instantly, you reduce the time needed for transfering the footages drastically... what needed for 5 hours turns into 1 hour.

I am intending to switch from my current MD 9000 to Sony HDR-SR1E(HDD recording).
Reason for change:
1- i want better picture quality.
2- save cost on DV tape (very high usage for me everyweek)

Is it a good move?
Any SR1E user yet, out there to give me comment about this Video Camera?
How it perform under low light?

well if u do notice, there's a standard set of video cameras being used only. i tottally wouldn't recommend this SRE at all.

standard cams used:

standard DV

Sony vx 2000 or 2100 , PD150 or 170 (best event coverage workhorse)
Panasonic DVX series
Canon XL and XM series

HDV

Sony FX1 or Z1p

Yes that's it. Time...
I don't want to spend time transfer movie from the tape to pc.
I wanted to finish editing earlier before dateline.
(alternatively can hopefully can save cost on tapes too)
Yes what you all say it true. I know it is not the right move, before i post it here.
SR1E a consumer camera at $2899 i can get dvx62 around the same price..
..it's ok i have my own reason why not to choose and go for this alternative..

Anyway guys thanks a lot for all the comment on my question #number 1.
Keep it coming i want to hear more.

5 tapes for a wedding? tat's a lot.. usually 2 tapes, max 3 tapes..
well maybe good for wedding express editing.. personally still not sure whether is the rite time for tat :dunno: maybe if need rent from cinegear and try it out 1st

HDV (consumer and prosumer) and HD (professional) video:-

1. lines and outlines are NOT sharp, NOT clear and NOT definite. they look edgy, in the form of square pixels. this is inherent. sharpness range from Digital Beta to DVCAM then to HD then HDV.

2. during fast panning especially in i-mode models will get to see actifacts. likewise for p-mode models, though depending on model could be slightly better than i-mode. this is inherent. clarity range from Digital Beta to DVCAM then to HD then HDV.

3. dynamic range for colours NOT as xxxx. this is inherent. richness of colours range from Digital Beta to DVCAM then to HD then HDV.

4. depth of field NOT as xxxx. inherent but may see improvement depending on how much of costs to pass to comsumer. Digital Beta and DVCAM 'win' hands down.

Please correct me for any errors.

but of course HDV or even HD is very delicious.

Sony has a 4 page ad on today paper promoting their HD camera.

Looks like they are trying hard to push the new HD cameras before canon or panasonic come in
