hi guys and ladies...

i have video cam but its a cassette type and right now i am having problem transferring the videos to my pc... i have tried using the usb cable but my pc doesnt register the new hardware like it usually does to any camera... is there any way to do it or do i need additional hardwares and softwares?

tks...

mini dv tape izzit? U need to use firewire and capturing software such as ulead videostudio to transfer and capture the video :)

usb are for only data transfer especially when it comes to video camera you need to get firewire cables since they are embedded in the cables both audio as well as visual signal to sum up usb is more of digital signal while firewire is more of analog signal.

yeah its the mini dv tape... so you mean that if i get a fire wire and plug it in my pc will automatically detect it like a usb and i can actually watched the mini dv tape on my pc and download it to my harddisk?

i see... so am i correct to say that usb is for data and firewire is for video? tks a million...

erm not very accurate. I think it is more on the specification and the working of of usb and firewire that matters and not firewire is for video and usb is for data. Both can be used to transfer data. Although i personally feel that firewire is faster than usb though usb 2.0 should be faster in theory when i test transfer speed on ext hdd.

tks for your advise... so right now if i am to plug a firewire cable into my video cam and my pc i should be able to view/transfer the video on my pc? is it possible to use the window media player instead of ulead videostudio (which i didnt have  )?

You can use "windows movie maker" if your are using Windows XP

thanks goodness i am using window xp now if not i will be clueless now... btw do you know roughly how much is a 60 mins mini dv cassette worth in harddisk space? i have 2 cassettes...

tks....

hmm depending on compression standards 60 min should be at least 10 gig or more in uncompressed AVI.but if you are using window movie maker, futher compression may bring it down to even 1gig or so for a decent quality video.
