Hi
I just brought a PENTAX K-x and looking for a flash that able to reach 200 Ft or like 16 storey high, I have 500mm tele lens BUT I broke and not able to buy a Pentax, Canon EX580EX II or Nikon type of flash.

I need it for bird shooting as sometime as high as a Pine tree (over 10 storey high), any recommendation for a cheap flash? I have look around and seen like Nissin etc but don't understand those setting/specs as a newbies.

Please give me some help and recommendation and I could afford $100 approx.

Thanks very much
Tom

What aperture would you shooting at?

What's the max ISO you feel comfortable using?

From there, calculate the GN of the flash you would need and then look for old auto/manual flash units of similar GN.

Also, consider that there's a flash attachment which 'magnifies' the flash output so that the light reaches further.

All in, I doubt if you're going to be able to do this for less than $100.

If bird is as high as 16 storey, forget about shooting. You wont be able to get a good shot.

First of all, thanks
My lens is fix at F/6.3
Confortable ISO can be 400 with less noisy or I can push to 800 still ok

Please tell me how to calculate it?
Thanks

Think I found it

No $100 flash can reach that far.
1 thing u can try is to booth the ISO and lower your shutterspeed and shoot with fill flash. :)

Oh yes... that's what I trying to do by putting an external flash using it as a fill flash to have further reach. I can booth to ISO 800 but which flash should I go for maybe $160 lol... maximum liao.

MAybe Pentax Mount Tumax 386 Flash might do the job?

everything in, i think u cant find any flash that can throw that far.

first your ISO is too low to extend the flash reach and your aperture is too small, u are left with the only option of depending on your flash power. think on the market the most powerful flash is the nissin ni866 or 868 (whatever) even with this flash the light will not reach, u will need a flash extender, CP got sell, u can see the thing at CP marina their display window. it help focus the flash light even more to give it a further throw.
