Film or Digital

Hi everyone. Just out of curiosity, if u already own a film leica and planning to get a second leica, would u stick to film, say M7, or go digital with the M8?

i understand that M8 isn't full frame. the reason i chose those 2 is because they're about the same price on the used market with the M8 perhaps about $500 more. which do u think would be a better/smarter choice?

It depends on the user.

I would get another M6 TTL with my current M6 TTL if possible, but thats me.

Even polaroid/instant film can be better than some digital for the same amount of money you put in...

If budget is not an issue, I would recommend having both - one film Leica RF and one digital Leica RF. Quality aside, they serve different purposes, although overall, I would still prefer film.

I have 1 film RF and 1 digital RF myself. Had an additional M6 which I did not mind keeping, but sold it to a very good friend.

yes u can. A hammer plus a screw driver. Hee Hee.
Imacon is a good choice. But I prefer a well build photomultiplier base device (ie most drum scanner) Which can pick up deep shadow in transparentcy (D3.4 plus plus) and retain the highlight tone smoothness. (vacume tube sounds better than transistor keke. ) it also capture more detail without employing high gain of USM or spiking optical/electronic signal.

Buy one of each. 50% money back for sure (Sell me half price in 3 months after you decide film or digital.) I take either one. Btw I like m6 more but from m2 to m5 also can lah.

Aiyah don't be a pixel peeper. Film and digital are different format for different usage. So what if your camera have the highest pixel count or your scanner is the highest resolving?

When I shoot my everyday life, I use my leica, when it comes to work I use my digital mf if even more high resolving output is needed, I loan other cameras. But how big do u need to print for that kind of file output? You printing billboard? I find digital MF already overkill.

I think it makes one look silly for thAt kind of gear they use and the kind of output they produce. You don't use a P45 back to print 3r or view digitally in CS. I use my v700 scanner, it is way enough. If I need to do big print, I'll find other drum scanners.

In short I think one should show us better pictures than showoff what they have? Pardon me though this is their money, I find this getting very silly for me. Tomorrows gear will always be better, so you want to wait? No? Then commit yourself at this very moment.

some time is just nice to keep and use some good old thing.
Tomorrows gear may not always be better.
To capture and show us better pictures is a very must.
Because by tomorrow these are ours good old memory.

Well, maybe it is only me. But I find it funny why are some are asking a Leica shooter who is choosing between an M7 and M8 to buy so many expensive gears? Highend drum scanner for what? Scan the tiny 35mm film to post on CS? No relevance. Dont tell me you do large prints everyday? Isn't a good flatbed more than enough? :thumbsd:

Ya, agree. Buy many lenses, even non Leica lenses.
I've got film & digital: Film is nice but a little ley chay. I enjoy digital more.
Scanning lagi worse: bought a Multi-format film scanner but haven't use yet!! hahaha
Bottom-line: Good to have both digital & film RF

Please include a Fuji Instax 7s or Instax 210 or Fuji FP-1 to complete the picture... :bsmilie:
