Film developing and digital conversion

Hi CSians,

As a complete film photography nut, I have a few questions to ask regarding film developing and stuff. First, how much would it cost to develop single roll of film? And is it possible to convert film negatives to digital straight? Or must I develop the individual photographs then scan and convert into a digital image? I have an outrageous idea but I have no idea if it would work theoretically. Thanks!
