1st off... I agree with the Public Prosecutors when he ask for a jail sentence of 12mths... for me, it should be between 9mth-18mth... I understand the Public Prosecutors is appealing the sentences.

2nd... 'EVERYDAY'... what everyday ?? Everyday someone (Domestic Helper) is being starved ?? All the Domestic Helper is being starved ?? Good if you could farther elaborate on the sentence ?? :think:

I cannot condone this sort of thing but I do not feel Singapore is on trial here but rather the couple more so the woman imo. Note how both wear black to their court date...sort of weird. The main thing I have issue with is the victim allowed this go on and on. How come when she was going to the bathroom in the commons did she not raise hell to bring attention to her plight? Come on if you are starving to death what do you have to lose? Get put in jail...three squares and deportation back to that scum bucket place you came from then everyone is happy.

If I sound crass color me however you wish but just remember everyone has a game even Philippino maids...who knows it may be an elaborate scam.

Not as easily done as you would have thought... for one thing, Singaporean prefers to 'Mind Their Own Business'... which is good for relationship between differences races and cultures... but bad in this horrible example.

The victim may not even knows her rights nor has access or allow to have access to a phone to call for help. I have seen cases like this myself... just recently while me and my wife is bringing our son to his playgroup... a Filipino Domestic Helper with the employer (a parent of a child in the Playgroup) came over to my wife (a Filipino herself) and the helper of another child (also friend of my wife)... she was asking what can be done if she is unhappy about working for her current employer... saying the employer is strict but didn't said she was abused... all my wife and her friend could only suggest she call her Employment Agent...

But I have to agree that at some point... one have to decide has the abuse gone way too far and its better to run or seek help whatever way possible...

And while horrible and terrible case like this appears every once in a while... with an estimated number of 201,000 (year 2010 estimate) of female domestic helper in SG... the numbers reported of abuse isn't especially high... By no means I'm saying/suggesting, that its 'Ok' to even have a single case... but I've heard of more horrible example especially from around the Middle East... where rape victims are imprison instead of the perpetrator. Which in many case, are the Male employer...

I do hope the Public Prosecutor is successful in their appeal... a longer and harder sentence will send a clear message that abuse of employees/spouse/child/elderly/vulnerable has no part in any society... :think:

This suggested that the accused couple live in a condo apartment; where many Singaporean homes are located too. They purchased the units using hard-earned money and savings. And many stayed in HDB purchased with 20-30 years loans.

So on what basis you made the statement of "super rich Singapore"?

You are conflating a couple of criminals with a whole nation which is a non starter...they are two totally different things. So are you saying the super rich folks of Singapore are all criminals? Sorry I don't buy your logic. Are you a bit envious because you are not able to have/exploit a maid yourself perhaps?

I can understand your vehemence towards the couple but the whole damn nation? Come on man...

You might want to have a closer look at these maids, origin, education, the 'training' they get before deployed to their employers. You are assuming things from your personal point of view.
I know a bit about the maids from Indonesia, based on insights I got in an agency. Not much different for maids form other countries.
- Many of them come from villages 'behind the forest', lured into the job by promises of money and whatnot. Girls in the larger cities rather work in their neighborhood or in town if they do maid jobs.
- If one of these girls has attended 10 years of school she's the lucky one. 8 years or less is common, mostly in some simple school with 2..4 grades in one classroom. Reading, writing, some simple calculations and Quran, that's it.
- Faked age happens due to lack of certificates and paper trails in local administration. 16 year old girls get a passport with age stated 22.
- They get a basic training in some training camps in Indonesia, where they learn something about Singapore households: household appliances, basics in housekeeping, basics in English.
- Many of them need to borrow money to pay for this, hoping that the promised salary might help to repay the debts. In fact, the first 6 months of their salary is used to pay the maid agency. They get nil.
- They never heard about their own rights. Whoever pays and feeds them is their 'master'.
- Many of them also get a good cultural shock when they enter Singapore. Isolation feeling, depression and homesickness are not uncommon.
While I also personally know many good employers who treat their maids well (some even allowing further education on weekends) and bring them along for family holidays, there are still some black sheep around.

I've read about this issue in relation to Singapore before and not just a cursory glance at a few articles either. Some or perhaps many of you would probably be astonished by how much stuff I have read about Singapore even some of the darker side stuff. Not to mention I am no spring chicken when it comes to the human condition.

I think of a maid job as an opportunity for that girl from the village in the woods to better herself and her condition but just like any opportunity there are things that can go sour very quickly. This is one way we come by wisdom and sometimes the lessons are harsh sometimes even to the point of being deadly.

As has been said before in this thread there are a boatload of foreign maids and other FT serving there. The odds are very much in their favor that they will indeed better their position in life.

A little anecdote about myself that if you are a perspicacious person might provide you with a clue about what makes me tick. Although I am a white male in a white male privileged society a good part of my upbringing occurred under the influence of a black uncle who was brought north to NYC in the Bronx from the deep south as a youngster for wolf whistling at a white girl. Saved him and his family from being lynched. He was raised on extremely tough streets brought in from a potentially violent cold demise by a white uncle who instilled something special in the kid. He was eventually able to escape to the relatively sleepy Midwest. Much of my youth I was 'raised' in turn by this black youngster turned into a good decent man. I have been on both sides of the fence. I was led to a gift that nearly all of my peers in all of life have never had the good fortune to be exposed too. Everyone has the scar...the trick is not to pick at your scars.
