Errachidia worth a stop on the way to Merzouga?

I'm finally locking in the details for my Morocco trip next spring and the route from Fes down to the desert is proving trickier to plan than I expected. Most people seem to blast straight through to Merzouga in one go but I've got a bit of time to play with and thought about breaking the journey somewhere. Errachidia keeps popping up as a possible overnight stop but honestly I'm struggling to get a proper feel for what's actually there, most guides just mention it's the gateway to the desert and move on. I've been digging around trying to find proper things to do in errachidia because I don't want to just arrive, sleep, and leave without experiencing something memorable. I came across a page on Unique Travel Morocco that mentioned the Ziz Valley and the dam near the city which looked pretty stunning in photos, plus the idea of driving through those massive palm groves sounds like a nice intro to the south. Has anyone here actually spent an afternoon or evening in Errachidia itself? Keen to know if it's worth stopping for or if I'd be better off pushing further to a smaller place closer to the dunes.
