Enter the Dragon

I just read this recently, so thought I'd share:

The Myth of the Komodo Dragon

The dragon charged at the guy because he ran? Sounds scary - but they do attack deer and buffalo according to that article, so humans are probably around that size too. Cheers!

Just sharing the info i learnt from the rangers actually. What the scientific community is debating about has not much to do with the fact that the bite can be lethal. And the bite can only be treated with several antibiotics at the moment, which is only completely available in Labuan Bajo, a 4 hr boat ride away.

In fact the venom theory is only presented after scans reveal developed venom glands but no venom has been conclusively collected, analyzed and proven. Definetly one of the major controvesies surrounding these magnificent beasts.

As for running humans (or prey), komodo dragon's eyesight is not very good. Sudden movements and swaying/dabgling objects seems to arouse the dragon's instinct to attack. It also uses it tongue to "smell" much like a snake and is very sensitive to the smell of blood. We are told again and again about this and the precautions to take. No scarves, towels etc. We also need to check for open bleeding wounds. And ladies were asked if they are having their period.

This is what I learnt from my conversations with the rangers. I am not a scientist myself so i cannot say what is scientifically accurate or not.
